Isaac Hempstead-Wright provides the voice of ‘Eggs’ and Elle Fanning lends her voice to ‘Winnie’ in the animated comedy The Boxtrolls directed by Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi, and based on the book by Alan Snow. The Focus Features and LAIKA film employs stop-motion animation as did LAIKA’s previous releases Coraline (2009) and ParaNorman (2012), and the trailers show The Boxtrolls will have a similar look to the studio’s past films.

Isaac Hempstead-Wright, best known as Bran Stark in Game of Thrones, said he didn’t even have to take time to think about his answer when he was asked to be a part of The Boxtrolls. Hempstead-Wright was anxious to be a part of LAIKA’s universe as was his co-star Elle Fanning.

“I was familiar with it because of Coraline. My sister did the voice of Coraline so I knew about how long it took and how amazing they made everything,” said Fanning during our interview at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. “I’ve always been interested in miniature things growing up, so to me it was so intriguing. They sent me the script and a big booklet of all these drawings of what they wanted the Boxtrolls to look like and the world they created, the colors. They had a picture of Winnie, a sketch, which was not quite what she turned out to be. It was in the beginning stages and they were just trying to figure out her clothes and her hair. But right away I wanted to do it. I haven’t done much animation and I like trying all things.”

The two young actors also discussed the process of providing voices for the film and a little about their characters in this interview from Comic-Con:

Focus Features and LAIKA will release The Boxtrolls in theaters on September 26, 2014.

The Plot:

The Boxtrolls is a family event movie that introduces audiences to a new breed of family – The Boxtrolls, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright) in the amazing cavernous home they’ve built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge.

When the town’s villain, Archibald Snatcher (Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnie (Elle Fanning). Together, they devise a daring plan to save Eggs’ family.
