Tom Hardy is a dog lover both in real life and on the screen in the upcoming dramatic film, The Drop, coming to theaters on September 12, 2014. And it’s Hardy’s young canine co-star who’s the focus of this new behind-the-scenes video featuring The Drop‘s cast and crew.

Everyone on the set apparently fell in love with the puppies who played Rocco the dog, and in this video, they discuss what it was like on the set and why the puppy played an important role in the story being told onscreen.

The Drop is based on the short story “Animal Rescue” by Dennis Lehane and is the final film of beloved actor James Gandolfini. Lehane adapted his own story for the screen, and Michaël R. Roskam directs a cast that includes Hardy, Gandolfini, Noomi Rapace, and Matthias Schoenaerts.

The Plot:

The Drop follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) through a covert scheme of funneling cash to local gangsters – “money drops” in the underworld of Brooklyn bars. Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv (James Gandolfini), Bob finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood’s past.

Interesting tidbit: The first time I interviewed Tom Hardy was for his film Warrior and during the interview with Hardy and his co-star Joel Edgerton, Hardy talked about the painful loss of his Bulldog, Max. At the end of our interview, Hardy talked about how much he misses his companion and best friend who had passed three months earlier. In fact, at the time of the Warrior promotional tour, Max’s ashes were sitting on the couch at Hardy’s home, a place where Max loved hanging out.
