Charlie Hunnam might be crowned king if the reports that he’s been offered the starring role in the new King Arthur movie are correct. Deadline’s reporting director Guy Ritchie is pursuing the Sons of Anarchy star to take the lead in the long-gestating project set up at Warner Bros Pictures.

If Hunnam signs on, he would be reuniting with his Pacific Rim co-star Idris Elba who’s attached to play a Merlin-like character. And Variety’s reporting Elizabeth Olsen may also be joining the cast.

Joby Harold (Awake) wrote the script for Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur. Lionel Wigram, Tory Tunnell, and Harold are producing the film and Warner Bros is aiming for a July 22, 2016 theatrical release.

Hunnam’s finishing up his run as Jax Teller on Sons of Anarchy with this seventh and final season and will likely be concentrating on film roles rather than TV projects, at least for a while. He was originally cast as Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, but (thankfully) he backed out of that project. He recently completed work on Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak which is heading to theaters on October 16, 2015.
