Hot on the heels of the announcement of Gareth Edwards as director of the first confirmed Star Wars stand-alone film comes news about a second stand-alone Star Wars movie. Lucasfilm and Disney have confirmed Josh Trank is set to direct one of many stand-alone movies planned that will exist outside the core Saga.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”

“The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood,” commented director Trank. “The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”

Trank’s first film, Chronicle, was a critical and box office success. He’s following that up with the new The Fantastic Four set up at 20th Century Fox.
