What do you know, the bad guys didn’t win after all. Sony Pictures has confirmed The Interview will be screening in select theaters on Christmas Day, despite terrorists threats. Although the film will not be playing in theaters owned by the major chains, independent theater owners have stepped up and committed to screening the film for audiences.
The Alamo Drafthouse in Dallas/Fort Worth along with indie theaters in Atlanta and Pittsburgh will be showing The Interview on Christmas Day, and there are apparently plans in the works to also release the film on VOD on its original opening date.
Sony issued the following statement on The Interview‘s release:
“We have never given up on releasing The Interview and we’re excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Entertainment. “At the same time, we are continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience.”
“I want to thank our talent on The Interview and our employees, who have worked tirelessly through the many challenges we have all faced over the last month. While we hope this is only the first step of the film’s release, we are proud to make it available to the public and to have stood up to those who attempted to suppress free speech.”
And the film’s stars Seth Rogen and James Franco tweeted out their reactions to Sony’s decision:
