Adventure Time writer/storyboard artist Rebecca Sugar and Emmy nominee Pete Browngardt have been given the greenlight by Cartoon Network to move ahead on two new animated shows. Sugar’s Steven Universe and Browngardt’s Uncle Grandpa were created as part of the “shorts development initiative” at Cartoon Network Studios and are both in pre-production. Cartoon Network’s aiming for a 2013 premiere of the two new series.

Steven Universe and Uncle Grandpa will build upon our record-breaking streak with original programming, and further define the voice for Cartoon Network Studios comedies,” said Cartoon Network Chief Content Officer Rob Sorcher. “Rebecca and Pete represent our next generation of homegrown talent, following Pen Ward and JG Quintel who set a high bar with their distinctive visual storytelling and unique comedic styles.”

Per Cartoon Network: “Steven Universe is a coming-of-age story told from the perspective of Steven, the youngest member of a team of magical Guardians of the Universe.”

Uncle Grandpa is “based upon the Emmy®-nominated short of the same name and follows the exploits of Uncle Grandpa—everyone in the world’s “magical’ uncle and grandpa.”

In other news, according to the network this summer was their most-watched in history.
