At the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con writer/executive Aaron Zelman talked about the ABC series Resurrection and how he got involved in the project. According to Zelman, he was convinced he needed to be involved in the series as soon as he was told the producers were interested in signing him up to adapt the book.

“I read the book and was blown away,” recalls Zelman.

Resurrection deals with the return of people who’ve passed away. However, unlike other stories that deal with those who’ve died coming back, Resurrection‘s returnees are neither zombies nor ghosts. Given the show’s subject matter, Zelman says there have been many conversations in the writers room dealing with spirituality.

“For sure, yeah, we really get into it in the writers’ room. I went through a period of time where I was really reading a lot of Buddhist philosophy and spiritual stuff that wasn’t necessarily connected to any specific religion or sect, but more about just the spiritual questions of why,” said Zelman. “I felt when I read this it really just connected with me. When I read Jason [Mott’s] novel I thought this was a humanistic approach to the bigger questions that almost anybody can relate to.”
