CBS’s Marshals season two, episode four, ended with Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Andrea (Ash Santos) in the blast radius. Episode five immediately confirms they’re both okay but Carpenter is deceased. This is good news; however, it’s obvious this bomb isn’t the massive bomb Carpenter stole items to build.
(This is a recap of season two, episode five – “Secret Weapon” – and there are spoilers.)
The team searches the area for the larger bomb, and Kayce spots fresh tire tracks. The bomb was taken somewhere by an unknown person working with Carpenter.
Back at the station, Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) is disappointed they didn’t hold off going into the barn. Carpenter might still be alive if they waited outside. After Cal leaves, Andrea warns Kayce, “If this bomb turns into the next Oklahoma City, he will blame himself for the rest of his life.”
Fortunately, they found fingerprints at the scene that belong to Derek McCoy. McCoy lives between Helena and Bozeman in farm country, and Harry (Brett Cullen) hopes that’s where Derek drove the bomb since there aren’t many people in the area.
Cal and the team prepare for their encounter with McCoy, gearing up while acknowledging there could be a massive bomb on site. They arrive at the address and kick open the door and place multiple people in restraints. Andrea follows a runner into the basement and has a moment of panic, but Belle (Arielle Kebbel) is there too and calms her down.
The runner breaks a window and now it’s Kayce who’s in pursuit. Kayce follows him to another building in the compound, and it turns out the runner is Derek’s brother, Will. Will attempts to run again and Kayce tackles him. The floor collapses and they fall through the hole.
Andrea can’t reach Kayce, but she’s interrupted by Belle asking about the basement and by Cal revealing the four people in the house are all related to Derek. The McCoys believe Rudy Carpenter is a hero and so is Derek because he’s fighting back against the government.
Derek’s mom announces that Derek told them to watch the 6pm news tonight.
Kayce and Will were knocked out in the fall, and Kayce comes to and can’t reach the team. Will’s leg is injured, and Kayce promises that if he tells where Derek is, he’ll fix his leg. Unfortunately, Will’s the black sheep of the family and no one tells him anything.
They hear gas escaping and Kayce realizes the building will blow when the gas hits the severed power line.
Belle questions Derek’s sister-in-law, Emma, and she claims she’s not close to Derek. She reminds Emma that if Derek’s successful, the family will spend their remaining days running from the family name.
The team’s not getting anywhere questioning the family members and no one seems to be worried about Kayce, even though they haven’t heard from him. Fortunately, Belle discovers that Derek’s brother, Johnny, works for a trucking company licensed to haul the bomb material that Carpenter recently stole. Johnny probably told Derek and Carpenter where the material was delivered. This is the leverage they need to turn Johnny, since he could now be charged as an accessory.
As Cal and Belle are talking, they hear noises from the basement. It’s only Emma’s young son, Mason, who snuck in after seeing all the vehicles outside. Belle volunteers to question him since she knows how to handle kids. Mason confesses that Derek’s his dad, not his uncle.
Meanwhile, Kayce’s trying to get Will to get up and help him push a beam so they can escape. Kayce threatens to break his other leg if he doesn’t get up. He compares Will to Jamie, saying Jamie never fit in and always got beat up. Plus, Beth made his life hell. Will claims he’s not so pathetic that a girl could beat him up. Kayce speaks the truth when he replies, “She’d eat you for lunch. Meaner than any of your brothers, guaranteed.”
Jamie had to be smarter and more cunning and eventually broke from the family. (That’s one way of describing him.)
Cal still can’t reach Kayce but doesn’t head out to find him.
The team, minus Kayce, decides Emma is the weak link since Mason disclosed Emma’s husband, Johnny, isn’t his father. Andrea takes over the questioning since she’s their best interrogator, even when she’s not having a good day. Emma denies Derek is Mason’s father but seems shocked to learn Johnny helped Derek acquire the bombmaking material. Emma claims that’s not true and she doesn’t know where Derek is. Andrea won’t let up and threatens to tell Johnny that Derek is Mason’s dad. Emma finally confesses that she gave Derek the info on the supplies, not Johnny. Derek had been blackmailing her.
Kayce and Will manage to move the beam and clear a path to the outside. Will’s struggling to walk and Kayce helps him but then pauses to ask about Derek’s truck that Will had mentioned earlier. Will claimed he couldn’t remember what it was, but Kayce knows that’s not true. Will says, “Come on! I’m forging my own path, just like your brother!”
Kayce responds, “One thing I forgot to tell you about my brother. He let the wrong people determine his fate.”

Cal’s only concern when Kayce and Will return to the main house is how Kayce got the info out of Will that Derek’s driving a white GMC box truck. (Cal is obsessed with everything being by the book, and it’s annoying.)
Andrea learns Derek’s target is Morris Bank and Trust in Helena because they took his family’s land. That’s 15 miles away and Cal knows they don’t have much time left before the bomb explodes.
Local and state police are checking out the area around Morris Bank and the bank’s been evacuated.
Cal thinks only Kayce could fall down a hole in a collapsing barn and end up with the info they need to track Derek.
The team arrives on scene and begins scanning the perimeter. Kayce and Andrea locate a white box truck in the underground parking lot. They can’t hide from a 2,000 lb. bomb, so instead they approach the vehicle just as a man enters the garage holding his phone. They order him to drop it, and Andrea watches him while Kayce opens the back of the truck. It’s empty, so this isn’t the truck and the man isn’t Derek.
There are cops everywhere but no sign of Derek or the truck. Kayce points out that taking the land feels personal, while attacking a building does not. They need to find the bankers who did the foreclosure. And it turns out the bankers are at a banquet at a nearby hotel. Andrea thinks the banquet’s full of predatory bankers, making it the perfect target for Derek’s revenge.
The team split up to cover different streets as they race to the hotel just a mile away. Andrea reports the hotel has been evacuated, but there are still people in the blast radius.
Belle spots a truck matching Derek’s also stuck in traffic, and Belle calls the station to ask them to keep the light red so they can move in undetected. Cal asks Kayce, Andrea, and Miles (Tatanka Means) to head toward it while keeping hidden. If Derek spots him, he’ll detonate the bomb and wipe out the whole block. Kayce confirms they’ll stay in his blind spot directly behind the vehicle.
The threesome walk over vehicles as they remain directly behind Derek’s truck. Andrea strips off her gear and walks by on the passenger side to get Derek’s attention while Kayce and Miles approach on the driver’s side. They hold Derek at gunpoint with his hands up, but he makes a sudden move. Shots ring out and Derek is killed before he can set off the bomb.
Back at the station, Harry admits that Cal’s handling everything right. He leaves it up to Cal to decide who will take charge of the team when he’s off work after his surgery.
Cal addresses his team and says Andrea will take over while he’s out. Everyone accepts it well, and Belle assures Cal that Andrea will be fine. (Even though it’s obvious Belle has questions about Andrea’s PTSD.)
Later, Belle meets Mitch Polson, the man who’s been threatening her about her debt and scaring her son. She warns him that she knows about his daughter and could send her back to jail on a parole violation. Family will be off-limits from now on, and Mitch will just have to wait until she gets the money to repay the casino. (Kebbel’s adopted an exaggeratedly slow manner of speaking this whole episode, which is a very strange choice.)
Cal relaxes at the bar and after admitting he’s had a rough day, asks his daughter about hers.
White Bear slides into a booth opposite Miles and asks for his support when he runs against Thomas Rainwater for chairman. He believes Miles’ voice carries a lot of weight now within the tribe.
Kayce’s just checked his phone to see if Andrea’s responded to a text when there’s a knock at his door. It’s Andrea and she feels horrible that he almost got killed after she let Will get away. She admits she’s having horrible nightmares – and even has them while she’s awake – since being kidnapped and traumatized. Andrea confesses she froze because the incident with the Cleggs has affected more than she even realized.
Kayce admits he didn’t even realize the battle she was fighting because he’s been so worried about Cal. He assures Andrea that he’s there for her and offers tea. Andrea doesn’t reply when he asks what type she wants, and he finds her already asleep on his couch. Kayce gently covers her with a blanket and watches over her.
