Neil Patrick Harris kicked off the 2013 Tony Awards show with a musical number that even included a bit of dancing by Mike Tyson. And while the number was a great way to launch the June 9, 2013 broadcast, the evening was actually all about the battle between Kinky Boots and Matilda.
Kinky Boots came into the awards show with 13, with Matilda The Musical hot on its heels with 12, and when the awards were handed out Kinky Boots did in fact continue to lead the pack with the most wins. Kinky Boots collected six Tonys, including Best Musical, as well as a historic win for Cyndi Lauper’s music and lyrics. Lauper became the first woman ever to win a Tony for music and lyrics solo (other women have won as part of a collaborative effort).
