‘Back to Black’ Trailer: Marisa Abela Stars as Amy Winehouse

“I want people to hear my voice and just forget their troubles for five minutes,” says Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse in the official trailer for Back to Black. After promising the film will show the love story behind one of the greatest albums of all times, the trailer ends with Abela as Amy saying, “I don’t write songs to be famous. I write songs ’cause I’ve got to make something good outta something bad.”

In addition to Marisa Abela (Industry), the cast includes Jack O’Connell (Ferrari), Eddie Marsan (Fair Play), and Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris). Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) directs from a screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh.

Back to Black was made with the full cooperation of Amy Winehouse’s estate. Alison Owen, Debra Hayward, and Nicky Kentish-Barnes served as producers, with Sam Taylor-Johnson, Anna Marsh, Ron Halpern, and Joe Naftalin executive producing.

“The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black that catapulted Winehouse to global fame,” reads Focus Features’ synopsis. “Told through Amy’s eyes and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film explores and embraces the many layers of the iconic artist and the tumultuous love story at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time.”

Focus Features will release Back to Black in theaters on Friday, May 17, 2024.
