Riverdale‘s Cole Sprouse and Big Little Lies‘ Kathryn Newton have signed up to star in Lisa Frankenstein, an updated twist on the classic horror story. Oscar winner Diablo Cody (Best Original Screenplay, Juno) is writing the screenplay and Zelda Williams will be making her feature-length film directorial debut with the project.
Focus Features offers the following description of Lisa Frankenstein:
“Set in 1989, an unpopular high schooler accidentally re-animates a handsome Victorian corpse during a lightning storm and starts to rebuild him into the man of her dreams using the broken tanning bed in her garage.”
Zelda Williams took to Twitter to talk about the film which she labels a zomb-com: “I know Hollywood gets a bad rep for regurgitating sequels and remakes and reboots over and over and over… and yeah, it totally does that! But it’s also finally letting me make the most bonkers, wonderful zombie script I’ve ever read, and for that, I will be forever grateful!”
Williams also tweeted: “Also, for anyone coming here to be like ‘THIS is your first feature?!’, it wasn’t meant to be. I had three films fall apart before this, because movies often do. It was discouraging, to say the least. But the fact this one survived and THRIVED to be my first? A f*cking gift.”
Screenwriter Cody will be involved as a producer along with MXN Entertainment’s Mason Novick. Cody and Novick previously worked together on Tully, Young Adult, Jennifer’s Body, and Juno. Jeff Lambert is executive producing.
Cole Sprouse’s credits include Riverdale, Moonshot, and Five Feet Apart. Kathryn Newton starred in Big Little Lies, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, Freaky, and The Society.
