The Days of Thunder sequel is heading to the starting line. Tom Cruise (Digger) officially announced the sequel has been greenlit and Anne Hathaway (The End of Oak Street, The Odyssey), who is in what feels like dozens of films this year, is joining him.

Cruise will reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle and Hathaway will play a team owner and engineer.

The original film was released on June 27, 1990 and starred Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, and Michael Rooker. Days of Thunder, which currently has a 38% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes, grossed $157 million worldwide, earning back its $60 million budget. Tony Scott was the director.

Will Staples (Without Remorse) is writing the sequel’s screenplay and Jonathan Levine (Nine Perfect Strangers) is on board to direct. The sequel will be produced by Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer, and Tommy Harper and filmed for IMAX.

Paramount Pictures announced a June 2, 2028 theatrical release in Dolby Cinema, 4DX, premium large formats, and IMAX.
