Gerard Butler (Phantom of the Opera, 300) hits the waves for the surfing drama Chasing Mavericks co-starring newcomer Jonny Weston. Chasing Mavericks is based on a true story and finds Butler playing surfer Frosty Hesson, mentor to champion surfer Jay Moriarity. And in this interview video courtesy of 20th Century Fox, Butler discusses why he wanted to be a part of this story, playing Frosty, and actually putting his body through the rigorous demands of surfing big waves.

Butler also talks about how he mentally prepared for the role and what surfing means to him.

The Plot:

Chasing Mavericks is the inspirational true story of surfing phenom Jay Moriarity (Weston). When 15-year-old Jay discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, is near his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler) to train him to survive it. As Jay and Frosty embark on their quest to do the impossible, they form a unique friendship that transforms their lives, and their quest to tame Mavericks becomes about more than surfing.
