‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ Trailer: Love Will Give You Life

The official trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio packs quite the emotional wallop. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer for the stop-motion film provides a sneak peek at all the key characters and reveals more about how del Toro’s approach differs from other adaptations of the classic fairy tale.

During a recent press conference, Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro explained why he’s fascinated with Pinocchio.

“The two essential fables that define my childhood and teenage years were Pinocchio and Frankenstein,” explained Guillermo del Toro. “It’s this idea that you’re thrown into a world that you barely understand, and you try to make sense of it as you grow. And they’re definitely father-and-son…or they’re stories that deal with that link and that bond.

They were of primal importance for me. And I always felt Pinocchio is one of those handful of characters – there are maybe 10 characters in the history of human storytelling that are capable of being universal and completely adaptable to anything. There’s Frankenstein, Pinocchio, Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes. These are characters that, even if you haven’t read the story, you know the story, or you think you know the story. And therefore, you can use them as metaphors for science, for human emotions, for many, many things.”

Guillermo del Toro co-directs with Mark Gustafson and co-wrote the screenplay with Patrick McHale. The voice cast includes Gregory Mann, Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Tilda Swinton, and Christoph Waltz. Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, and Burn Gorman also lend their voices to the animated fairy tale.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is playing in select theaters and will be available to stream on Netflix beginning December 9, 2022.
