Disney fans attending D23 were the first to view the new Moana 2 trailer, along with special appearances by the animated film’s stars Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson. Cravalho took the stage and sang “We’re Back,” a new song in the sequel, and Johnson led a “chee hoo!” chant.
Following its premiere at D23, Disney released the trailer and a new teaser poster online. The studio also confirmed Rachel House (Moana’s Grandma, Tala), Temuera Morrison (Moana’s father, Chief Tui), and Nicole Scherzinger (Moana’s mother, Sina) are returning. Hualālai Chung, David Fane, and Rose Matafeo are voicing Moana’s crew members Moni, Kele and Loto. And Awhimai Fraser voices a “mysterious” new character named Matangi. Gerald Ramsey is on board to voice Moana’s ancestor, Tautai Vasa, and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda voices Moana’s little sister, Simea.
“Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 reunites Moana (voice of Cravalho) and Maui (voice of Johnson) three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers,” reads the official synopsis. “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller direct, with Miller and Jared Bush writing the sequel. Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa‘i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina provide the film’s music. Christina Chen and Yvett Merino serve as producers, and Jennifer Lee, Bush, and Johnson executive produce.
Moana 2 opens in theaters on November 27, 2024.
