‘Oppenheimer’ New Trailer Starring Cillian Murphy and Matt Damon

The new trailer for writer/director Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer begins with J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) warning that they could be losing the race against the Nazis to develop an atomic bomb. Hitler’s people have an 18-month head start. The three-minute trailer goes on to touch on the inception of the Manhattan Project and the ethical and moral dilemmas involved in developing a weapon with the potential to annihilate the entire planet.

Cillian Murphy previously worked with Christopher Nolan in 2005’s Batman Begins as Dr. Jonathan Crane / Scarecrow; 2008’s The Dark Knight in a cameo appearance; 2010’s Inception playing Robert Fischer, heir to the energy conglomerate Fischer Morrow; and 2017’s Dunkirk as a Royal Navy soldier. Oppenheimer marks his first starring role in a Nolan film.

The all-star cast includes Oscar winner Matt Damon, two-time Oscar nominee Robert Downey, Jr., Oscar nominee Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, and Michael Angarano. Oscar winner Rami Malek, eight-time Oscar nominee Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, and Matthew Modine also star.

Oppenheimier is based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer and was shot in a combo of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format photography. Nolan’s latest big-budget production marks the first time a feature film has included iMAX black and white analogue photography.

Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer will open in theaters on July 21, 2023.

Matt Damon portrays General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
