The original 1982 Poltergeist still stands the test of time, with effects that look reasonably good even by today’s standards. That film, directed by horror meister Tobe Hooper from a script by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor, made millions of moviegoers think twice about leaving their televisions on a fuzzy station and led to the decline in sales of clown dolls. The new version will apparently pay homage to classic scenes from the original, or so it appears in the first batch of photos released from 20th Century Fox’s 2015 Poltergeist.

The photos which debuted in USA Today feature a nightmare-inducing clown doll as well as a young girl touching a TV screen.

2015’s Poltergeist will open in theaters on July 24, 2015 and the first trailer will arrive online on February 5th. The cast includes Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris, Nicholas Braun, Saxon Sharbino, and Kennedi Clements. Gil Kenan (Monster House, City of Ember) directed from a script by David Lindsay-Abaire (Oz the Great and Powerful), with Sam Raimi producing.

Commenting on the remake in an interview with USA Today, director Kenan said, “The thing that keeps them a family is what they have to draw on, to stay sane, and also to win Madison back. The film is super-scary. And it’s scary on its own terms. I am excited to finally be able to share that with the world.”

The Plot:

Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi and director Gil Kenan contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.
