Three-time Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling (Barbie, La La Land, Half Nelson) stars as a middle school science teacher who can’t even moonwalk but is now expected to spacewalk and save Earth in Project Hail Mary. He’s reluctantly recruited for a mission that has almost zero chance of succeeding, hence the title. And in the final moments of the trailer, it seems our hero learns earthlings aren’t alone in this universe.
Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Emmy nominee Lionel Boyce (The Bear), Ken Leung (Industry), and Milana Vayntrub (Die Hart) also star.
“Science teacher Ryland Grace (Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light-years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out,” reads Amazon MGM Studios’ synopsis. “He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction…but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”
Drew Goodard (High Potential) adapted Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, with Oscar-winning filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directing. Gosling, Lord, Miller, Weir, Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, and Rachel O’Connor serve as producers. Executive producers include Goddard, Patricia Whitcher, Lucy Kitada, Nikki Baida, Sarah Esberg, and Ken Kao.
Project Hail Mary opens in theaters and IMAX on March 20, 2026.
