Two-time Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch and Oscar winner Olivia Colman engage in an escalating feud as their marriage falls apart in the trailer for The Roses. And if you watch the trailer and think the setup feels familiar, it’s because The Roses is a reimagining of the 1989 film The War of the Roses starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner and based on the novel of the same name.
Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, and Kate McKinnon also star.
“Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids,” reads Searchlight Pictures’ synopsis. “But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.”
The Roses opens in theaters on August 29, 2025.
Jay Roach (Meet the Fockers) directs from a screenplay by Tony McNamara. Producers include Roach, Michelle Graham, Adam Ackland, Leah Clarke, Ed Sinclair, and Tom Carver. Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, James L. Brooks, Michael Adler, Jonathan Adler, and Cáit Collins serve as executive producers.
