Netflix has set a November limited theatrical release, and November 21 streaming release, for Train Dreams. The drama sits at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes following its premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
Critics Choice Awards nominee Joel Edgerton (Loving) and two-time Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Brutalist, The Theory of Everything) lead a cast that includes Nathaniel Arcand, Clifton Collins Jr., John Diehl, Paul Schneider, Kerry Condon, and William H. Macy. Will Patton is the narrator.
“Based on Denis Johnson’s beloved novella, Train Dreams is the moving portrait
of Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and
beauty in the rapidly changing America of the early 20th century,” reads Netflix’s synopsis.
Oscar nominees Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar (Sing Sing) co-wrote the screenplay and Bentley directs. Producers include Marissa McMahon, Teddy Schwarzman, William Janowitz, Ashley Schlaifer, and Michael Heimler. Joel Edgerton, Scott Hinckley, Greg Kwedar, and John Friedberg serve as executive producers.
“It’s a really special story and it feels very unique in that it is just about this one person’s life,” said Bentley to Netflix’s Tudum. “This very simple life. Robert Grainier doesn’t do anything that really alters the course of history—he doesn’t fight in some great battle or create some invention that changes people’s lives, and yet he lives a very deep and rich life.”
