The big winner of the 2016 Billboard Music Awards was The Weeknd, taking home eight awards including Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, and Top R&B Artist. Adele followed in second place with five wins, snagging the Top Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, and Top Selling Song awards. Kirk Franklin was a three-time winner while Justin Bieber, Wiz Khalifa, Charlie Puth, twenty one pilots, Hillsong UNITED, and Walk the Moon each earned two awards.

The 2016 show was the first Billboard Music Awards show to air live on the West Coast. Hosted by Ludacris and Ciara, the Billboard Music Awards took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and featured Madonna and Stevie Wonder performing a tribute to Prince. Britney Spears kicked off the show with a medley of her hits, Celine Dion performed “The Show Must Go On,” and Kesha performed Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe” with Ben Folds. Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton teamed up on “Go Ahead and Break My Heart” and The Go-Gos celebrated the 35th anniversary of “We Got the Beat” with a special performance.
