“Somebody That I Used to Know” Hits #1 on 3 Billboard Charts

This news verifies what I already knew to be true. I’m not the only one addicted to Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.”

Gotye has just achieved a feat no other Australian-raised artist has accomplished this century: his multi-platinum song hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, marking the first time an Australian solo act has earned that top spot since Olivia Newton-John snagged #1 with “Let’s Get Physical” in 1981.

“Somebody That I Used To Know,” off of Gotye’s Making Mirrors album, also has just hit #1 on both the Billboard Digital Songs Chart and the Billboard On-Demand Streaming Chart.

Gotye (pronounced Gauthier) has a cross-over hit with the mesmerizing “Somebody That I Used To Know,” earning the number one position on the Alternative chart for nine weeks, and it’s currently Top 10 at the Hot AC format and Top 15 at the Top 40 format. The song has sold over 4.5 million downloads, and the video’s been watched over 200 million times on YouTube.

The cast of Glee performed the tune on the April 10, 2012 episode and American Idol contestants Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone covered it on April 11th. And Gotye performed the song, as well as “Eyes Wide Open,” on the April 14th episode of Saturday Night Live.
