With lyrics such as “Someone’s gonna paint you another sky” and “You’re like 22 girls in one and none of them know what they’re running from,” it’s not pushing things to assume John Mayer’s “Paper Doll” is his response to Taylor Swift’s “Dear John.” That song – one of the many break-up tunes penned by Swift – included the line “You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain,” and Mayer’s “Paper Doll” seems to be his lyrical swipe at Swift’s take on their old relationship.
Mayer and Swift dated back in 2009 and Swift’s 2010 “Dear John,” released after they broke up, was a pointed declaration of how Swift felt Mayer treated her during their brief romance.
Mayer’s just released a “Paper Doll” lyric video featuring the queen of Prancerise, Joanna Rohrback. How her involvement in the video relates to the Mayer/Swift lyrical battle is unknown, but she’s fun to watch nonetheless. However…the song itself isn’t one of Mayer’s finer offerings.
