The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has confirmed that 282 feature films are in contention for the 2013 Best Picture Oscar, based on qualifying theatrical runs and other Academy eligibility requirements. Films must have been in theaters for at least seven consecutive days (in LA) and they must be at least 40 minutes long in order to qualify.

Best Picture contenders also need to have premiered in theaters in order to be considered for an Oscar. In other words, they can not appear first on DVD or Video On Demand prior to a theatrical run.

The 5,856 Academy members will begin voting on the 2013 Oscars on Monday, December 17, 2012. Members have until 5pm (PT) on January 3, 2013 to return their votes via a mail-in paper ballot or electronically. Any votes received after the deadline will not count.

The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30am PT. The 2013 Oscars will take place on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center.
