Marshmellows overcame the power of the Vampire Academy fan base to help Veronica Mars nab the title of MTV’s Most Anticipated Movie of the Year award. Voting took place over the course of a month and it came down to the wire, with the battle between the long-awaited feature film adaptation of the cult favorite Veronica Mars television series and the big screen adaptation of the first book in Richelle Mead’s bestselling young adult series raking in over 40 million votes.

More than 200 million votes were cast over the course of the MTV Movie Brawl, and here’s the breakdown of votes courtesy of MTV:

In the first round, the Kickstarter-funded movie managed to take down the highly anticipated Marvel Studios movie Guardians of the Galaxy. Round two pitted Mars against the Robert Pattinson-starring The Rover. Only a split in the vote between Rover and the also Pattinson-starring Maps to the Stars helped Mars eke ahead.

Then came round three, and the unbelievable happened. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1, poised to be the blockbuster follow-up to 2013’s biggest movie, fell at the last moment as Mars pulled ahead, taking the round by two measly percentage points of the vote.

In the Final Four, Mars took on The Maze Runner for a heated battle that ultimately found the Gladers ceding to the Marshmallows. The Final Two ended with Vampire Academy fans fighting long and hard, but ultimately falling to Mars.
