Alphas will be returning for season two, so says Syfy, with the network picking up the dramatic series for 13 new episodes to air in 2012. The series kicked off on July 11th and now holds the record, according to Syfy, for being the network’s most-watched original scripted series premiere in two years. Alphas is averaging 3.3 million total viewers, beating out MTV’s Teen Wolf and AMC’s The Killing.

Alphas‘ smart, innovative approach to a superhero franchise has clearly caught on with our audience,” stated Mark Stern, President, Original Content, Syfy, and Co-Head, Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. “From the first-rate writing to the outstanding cast lead by David Strathairn, we’re very proud of what was achieved in its first season and look forward to seeing this series fulfill even more of its creative potential in a second season.”

The Plot:
Alphas follows a clandestine group of ordinary people whose unique neurological condition equips them with extraordinary physical abilities. Led by preeminent neurologist and psychiatrist Dr. Lee Rosen (David Strathairn) and operating within the Defense Department, the team investigates cases involving other Alpha activity.

Alphas, created by Zak Penn and Michael Karnow, also stars stars Malik Yob, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Ryan Cartwright and Laura Mennell. Guest stars have included Summer Glau, Garret Dillahunt, Lindsay Wagner, Brent Spiner and Rebecca Mader.
