Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has joined the cast of WGN America’s dramatic series, Pure, in a recurring guest star role. Hannigan will take on the role of Esther Dunkel, “a lapsed Mennonite who is nobody’s fool and has been helping her lawyer-boyfriend funnel a fortune in cartel cash through a local bank,” in season two.

The six-episode first season will air on WGN America in 2019. Season one already aired on Canada’s CBC and is available on Hulu. Filming’s expected to begin on season two this summer.

Alyson Hannigan joins returning cast members Ryan Robbins (Arrow, The Killing) as Noah Funk, Alex Paxton-Beesley (The Strain, Cardinal) as Anna Funk, A.J. Buckley (CSI: NY, Justified) as Detective Bronco Novak, and Oscar nominee Rosie Perez (Search Party, White Men Can’t Jump) as DEA Agent Phoebe O’Reilly. The second season will also feature Chris Heyerdahl (Hell on Wheels), Zoie Palmer (Ransom), and Victor Gomez (Orphan Black).

The crime drama was created by Michael Amo (The Listener). Amo wrote the series and serves as an executive producer with Ken Girotti, Brett Burlock, Pete Emerson, and David MacLeod (Haven). Girotti (Orphan Black, Vikings) also directs the series. Pure‘s a Two East Productions and Cineflix Studios productions in association with WGN America, Super Channel, Hulu and the CBC.

The Plot: The series takes us deep inside a closed, secretive subculture through the eyes of a conflicted, good-hearted man trying to protect his family and preserve his faith. Inspired by true events, Pure is the journey of Noah Funk-newly elected Mennonite pastor-who is determined to rid his community of the scourge of drugs and its nefarious ties to a transborder smuggling alliance with ruthless Mexican cocaine cartels. But just when he thinks he’s won, he’s thrust headlong into a desperate world of violence, greed, and betrayal.
