Fox has announced a 10-city “American Idol Small Town Audition Bus Tour” which will allow wannabe singers to try out for the show during an expanded audition process. In addition, potential contestants will now be able to audition online and through a new “Nominate An Idol” program.

According to Fox, the mobile audition bus will be on the road in August, stopping in Idaho Falls, ID; Billings, MT; Casper, WY; Rock Rapids, IA; Iowa City, IA; Bowling Green, KY; Clarksdale, MS; Joplin, MO; Dodge City, KA; and Grand Junction, CO. The new mobile audition opportunity will give thousands of hopefuls who might not have made it to one of the cities selected for this year’s regular auditions a shot at fame.

The “Nominate An Idol” program opens the process up to friends and family members of potential AI contestants. With this new program it will be possible to secretly nominate a friend or family member by completing an online form that includes a video (or a link to a video online). A film crew will then surprise those deemed AI possibilities, giving those singers a shot at auditioning in advance of the next round of auditions.

The third new audition method is auditioning online. Beginning August 1st and continuing through August 14th, hopefuls can submit an audition video online at www.americanidol.com. The video must be a cappella and be a performance of one of the songs off of an approved list.

Season 12 of American Idol premieres in January 2013.
