Marvel officially announced Angela Bassett has signed on to a starring role in the comic book-inspired action film, Black Panther. Marvel Studios also confirmed Bassett is taking on the role of Ramonda, mother of T’Challa (aka Black Panther). Chadwick Boseman is tackling the title character, with Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, and Florence Kasumba also committed to roles in Black Panther.
Angela Bassett was nominated for an Academy Award in 1994 for playing Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It. She’s a three-time Emmy Award nominee for her performances in The Rosa Parks Story and American Horror Story, and earned two Screen Actors Guild nominations for Ruby’s Bucket of Blood and Betty and Coretta.
Marvel’s Black Panther will be directed by Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed). Marvel and Disney are targeting a February 16, 2018 theatrical release.
