Lionsgate scored the number one spot at the box office over the August 23-25, 2019 weekend, with Angel Has Fallen ringing up $21.2 million over its first three days in release. That $21.2 million is just ever so slightly behind the opening weekend numbers of 2016’s London Has Fallen, the second film of the U.S. President in peril franchise.

The first film of the Fallen series, Olympus Has Fallen, debuted on March 22, 2013. The action thriller starring Gerard Butler grossed $30 million during its first weekend in theaters. It went on to earn $170 million before exiting theaters. London Has Fallen improved on those box office numbers, finishing its run with $205 million.

Critics haven’t been kind to the franchise overall, with the first film receiving a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the second scoring negative reviews to the tune of 26% on RT. Angel Has Fallen currently rests at 40%, a rotten score, on RT.

Despite the reviews, the franchise apparently hasn’t worn out its welcome. Of course, there wasn’t much in the way of new competition to steal the action audience away from Fallen #3. That will change when It Chapter 2 arrives on August 30th.
