Box Office Report: ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Buzzes Into First Place

Ant-Man and the Wasp flew by Ant-Man‘s opening weekend numbers. The first Ant-Man movie starring Paul Rudd opened in theaters on July 17, 2015 and collected $57 million at the box office over its first weekend in domestic release. The 2018 sequel which upped Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp to co-starring status rang up an impressive $76 million during its opening weekend. Both Ant-Man movies are rated PG-13 and both were directed by Peyton Reed, with the first film grossing $519 million worldwide before exiting theaters.

The weekend’s other new wide release, The First Purge, got an early jump on the weekend by opening on Wednesday, July 4th. The First Purge picked up $17 million this weekend and now stands at $31 million since hitting theaters on Independence Day.

The First Purge is the prequel to the franchise which includes 2013’s The Purge, 2014’s The Purge: Anarchy, and 2016’s The Purge: Election Year. The Purge: Election Year holds the franchise record with $118 million worldwide in ticket sales.

Next weekend, Ant-Man and the Wasp will be challenged by newcomers Skyscraper starring Dwayne Johnson and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.
