Despicable Me 3 fell short of Despicable Me 2 over its first three days in release, however it still easily managed a first place finish at the box office. The latest film of the successful animated movie franchise opened about $10 million behind its predecessor, with 63% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes giving it a positive review while 2013’s Despicable Me 2 found 73% of RT critics awarding a positive review. Paying audiences also liked Despicable Me 2 slightly better, according to CinemaScore, as the second film averaged an ‘A’ while Despicable Me 3 earned an ‘A-‘ score.

Second place finisher Baby Driver surpassed pre-release estimates, ringing up $21 million over the three day weekend. Baby Driver got a jump on the weekend by cruising into theaters on Wednesday, June 28th, and has rung up $30 million domestically since its release. The music-driven action film directed by Edgar Wright currently sits at an incredible 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (192 fresh reviews, only 5 negatives).

Despicable Me 3 will only hold onto the top spot at the box office for one week as Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017. No other major releases will be going up against the webslinger when it opens in 4,000 theaters.
