It wasn’t merely the fact Hurricane Harvey was delivering catastrophic damage or that Mayweather and McGregor were mixing it up in the boxing ring that kept people away from theaters over the August 25-27, 2017 weekend. The lack of interest in new films Leap! and Birth of a Dragon combined with the tepid reception to last week’s top film, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, sank this weekend’s box office to lows it hasn’t seen in more than 15 years. To top off the bad news for film studios, the domestic box office isn’t supposed to rebound until Warner Bros. Pictures’ releases It in theaters on September 8, 2017.

Upcoming September 2017 releases also include Home Again with Reese Witherspoon, American Assassin with Dylan O’Brien, mother! starring Jennifer Lawrence, Kingsman: The Golden Circle starring Colin Firth, and American Made with Tom Cruise.
