The Vatican Has Its Pope

Showtime LogoNo, not that Vatican. We’re talking about Showtime’s The Vatican starring Kyle Chandler. The network’s just announced Bruno Ganz (Downfall) has been cast as Pope Sixtus VI. According to the official announcement, Pope Sixtus VI is of German ancestry and is an “unassuming and introspective caretaker of the Church, who struggles with his own legacy, and how history will judge his papacy.”

Sir Ridley Scott’s directing the pilot episode from a script by Paul Attanasio (House, Quiz Show). The cast also includes Anna Friel, Matthew Goode, Sebastian Koch, and Ewen Bremnet.

The Plot:

The Vatican will explore the relationships and rivalries, as well as the mysteries and miracles, behind one of the world’s most hidden institutions.

Chandler plays Cardinal Duffy, the Archbishop of New York, whose progressive leanings excite some and alarm others within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. Friel is the witty, rebellious younger sister of the Cardinal, Kayla Duffy, and Goode is Papal Secretary Bernd Secretary Sebastian Koch, the Pope’s closet confident. Koch will play Cardinal marco Malebra, the Vatican’s secretary of state, and Bremner is Monsignor Alberico Iemma, who is charged with the complex job of investigating and pronouncing miracles for the church.
