Lorne Michaels told the New York Times that Cecily Strong will co-host the Saturday Night Live Weekend Update segment with Seth Meyers until he leaves the show in February to begin hosting the Late Show on NBC. Strong will initially share the Weekend Update desk with Meyers and then eventually take over as the solo host.

Whether or not she’ll solo host this season is still up in the air as Michaels hopes Meyer will be able to return to SNL for just the Weekend Update segments since his late night show doesn’t air on Fridays.

“Cecily, from the first show, was right there,” stated Michaels in his NYT interview. “She exploded.”

NBC also confirmed the addition of six cast members as featured players. With Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, and Fred Armisen now gone from the late night series, Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O’Brien, Noël Wells, and Brooks Wheelan are filling in empty spots as featured players.

Season 39 of SNL kicks off on September 28, 2013 with Tina Fey hosting and Arcade Fire as musical guest.
