Emma Watson (the Harry Potter films, Noah) has signed on to star in the dramatic film The Circle based on the book by Dave Eggers. Watson joins the cast, which is led by Tom Hanks, with The Spectacular Now‘s James Ponsoldt adapting Eggers’ book and directing.

The film’s set up with Image Nation and Parkes MacDonald Productions, and Hanks and Gary Goetzman from Playtone and Likely Story’s Anthony Bregman are producing.

Commenting on Watson’s casting, writer/director Ponsoldt said, “Emma Watson is one of my favorite actors, and her incredible talent, sensitivity, and deep intelligence will bring an electric energy to The Circle.”

Filming’s expected to begin in September in California.

The Plot:

Eggers’ novel focuses on a young woman (Watson) who is hired for a big job in an Internet monopoly called the Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency.

The novel turns into a contemporary thriller about the perils of life in a digital age where personal data is collected, sifted and monetized and used for surveillance, rendering privacy obsolete.
