New Line Cinema’s It, based on the bestselling Stephen King book, broke multiple box office records over its opening weekend. Directed by Andy Muschietti and starring Bill Skarsgard as the killer clown Pennywise, It now holds the title for the largest opening weekend of September. It also claims the top spot for the biggest opening weekend of a horror film and, according to Box Office Mojo, the R-rated horror movie has already collected the fifth highest domestic gross of any film of its genre in just three days in theaters.

It revived the box office which had hit its lowest point in years leading up to the horror film’s theatrical release over the September 8, 2017 weekend. Without It snagging huge numbers, the box office would have looked dismal again as second place finisher Home Again only managed $9 million.
