Hiccup and his best beastie friend Toothless led the charge at the box office for the February 22nd through 24th weekend. The third film of the DreamWorks Animation franchise, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World not only secured its spot at the top of the box office chart with a $55 million opening weekend, it also scored the biggest first weekend of the series.

The first How to Train Your Dragon debuted in theaters on March 26, 2010 and rang up $43 million domestically over its opening weekend. The critically acclaimed animated comedy grossed $494 million worldwide before exiting theaters. The second film, How to Train Your Dragon 2, premiered on June 13, 2014 and topped the original film’s opening weekend by grossing $49 million domestically. How to Train Your Dragon 2 also finished in front of the first film overall in theaters with a $621 million worldwide box office run.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World was not only a hit with audiences, it also won over critics. The PG-rated family-friendly film is currently sitting at 92% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

The first Dragon film should retain its hold on the top spot at the box office over the March 1-3, 2019 weekend. The only films set to open in wide release are the adult thriller Greta and Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral, and neither film targets the younger How to Train Your Dragon audience.
