The field has narrowed to nine foreign films in the running for the 2016 Oscars. The nine films remain from a field that originally contained 80 possible contenders in the 88th Academy Awards foreign film category. The nominees will be announced on January 14, 2016 at 5:30am PT and the 2016 Oscars will take place on February 28th with Chris Rock as host.
Five of the nine remaining films will be nominated in the foreign film category after committees in New York, LA, and London cast their votes. According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the committees will watch three films per day between January 8 and January 10 before casting their ballots.
