Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr in ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’

Warner Bros Pictures’ action comedy Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows has become the biggest box office earner of December 2011, according to the studio. Starring Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson, Sherlock Holmes #2 earned $90.56 million thru December 26th and leads the December domestic box office. And including Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows‘ international take, the second film featuring the super sleuth and directed by Guy Ritchie has rung up $136.26 worldwide.

Making the announcement, Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, stated, “Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, together with director Guy Ritchie, have once again proven to be a winning combination for moviegoers, and we believe that the audience response and strong word of mouth will continue to carry Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows through the holidays and beyond. We congratulate everyone involved in the film on once again making this classic character irresistible to contemporary audiences.”

“The first Sherlock Holmes was a huge hit with international audiences, and we are extremely pleased with the way moviegoers have again embraced the new film. With many more markets yet to open, we are looking forward to a long and lucrative run for the film,” added Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The Plot: Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room…until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large — Professor James Moriarty (Jared Harris) — and not only is he Holmes’ intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may give him an advantage over the renowned detective. Holmes’ investigation into Moriarty’s plot becomes more dangerous as it leads him and Watson out of London to France, Germany, and finally Switzerland.

But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead and moving perilously close to completing his sinister plan. If he succeeds, it will not only bring him immense wealth and power but alter the course of history.
