Filmmaker James Cameron says Sigourney Weaver will be back for the three Avatar sequels, but she won’t be playing Grace Augustine. Weaver will be joining confirmed returning Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang for more fun in the world of the Na’vi, with filming expected to get underway later this year.

“Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the Avatar sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration,” stated Cameron.

The three Avatar sequels will be shot back-to-back and 20th Century Fox is aiming for December 2016, 2017, and 2018 releases. The original film was released on December 18, 2009 and holds the record as the highest grossing film of all time, collecting $2.8 billion worldwide during its theatrical run. Avatar also holds the record as the top-selling film on Blu-ray.
