Three More Added to the ‘Sound of Music’ Cast

NBC confirmed three more actors have been added to the cast of The Sound of Music set to air on December 5, 2013. The musical will be performed live, with Carrie Underwood and True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer handling the lead roles of Maria and World War I hero Capt. Georg Von Trapp.

Joining them will be Tony Award winners Audra McDonald, Laura Benanti, and Christian Borle.

Five-time Tony Award winner McDonald (The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, A Raisin in the Sun, Ragtime, Master Class, and Carousel) will be playing Mother Abbess. Tony Award winner Benanti (Gypsy) and three-time nominee will handle the role of Elsa Schrader. And Tony Award winner Borle (Peter and the Starcatcher) will play Max Dettweiler.

The Sound of Music‘s music and lyrics were written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, and the Broadway production debuted back in 1959.

In addition to announcing new cast members, NBC and Carrie Underwood shared the first poster from the upcoming musical.
