Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming earned rave reviews from critics and moviegoers along with the third biggest domestic opening of 2017 behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Wonder Woman. The revamped Spider-Man franchise with Tom Holland in the titular role earned an impressive $117 million, enough to make it the second largest opening for any Spider-Man film.

The series reboot with Andrew Garfield fell far short of this new Holland-led Spider-Man‘s numbers, with 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man ringing up a $62 million domestic opening weekend and 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 grossing $91 million over its first weekend in release. Neither of those films earned the same kind of positive reviews and advance word-of-mouth buzz that helped propel 2017’s Spider-Man offering to a nearly $120 million opening.

Next weekend will find the webslinger going up against the final film of the new Planet of the Apes trilogy, War for the Planet of the Apes. The horror film Wish Upon starring Ryan Phillippe and Joey King will also be entering theaters on July 14, 2017.
