After logging the most-watched series premiere in FX’s history with 12.7 million viewers tuning in to check out the series from Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse, it’s a pretty obvious move by FX to give The Strain a second season order. Based on the books by del Toro and Chuck Hogan, The Strain‘s first season still has seven new episodes set to air on Sundays at 10pm ET/PT.

Season two will air in 2015 and consist of 13 episodes.

“We’ve never had any doubts about The Strain,” said John Landgraf, CEO, FX Networks and FX Productions. “Working with Guillermo del Toro, Carlton Cuse, and the brilliant cast led by Corey Stoll has been everything we had hoped it would be and more. It is thrilling when you have a show that is a creative and commercial hit, which is a rare accomplishment in this increasingly crowded marketplace. We look forward to having it on FX for as long as Carlton, Guillermo and Chuck Hogan need to tell this epic tale.”

According to FX, The Strain is ranked #1 in new shows on cable among adults 18 – 49. Overall, the series has been averaging 11 million viewers.

“I am thrilled! Another season to spread the virus!” said del Toro. “Working with Carlton, Chuck and FX has been immensely rewarding and we have such sights to unveil in the upcoming episodes—the blood hits the fan on this one, mankind becomes an endangered species.”

“It’s been immensely satisfying over the last year-and-a-half to work with the incredible team at FX, Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan to bring The Strain to life,” added Cuse. “I am grateful for all the blood, sweat and tears (but mostly blood) given to the project by all involved, and I could not be more excited to continue telling this epic story.”

The Plot:

The Strain tells story of “Dr. Ephraim Goodweather” (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. Goodweather and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.
