Tina Majorino Joins ‘Veronica Mars’

Tina Majorino

It’s been assumed for a while that Tina Majorino would be reprising her role as Veronica’s friend, Cindy ‘Mac’ Mackenzie, in the movie version of Veronica Mars. And, thankfully, we all assumed correctly, as Rob Thomas just confirmed Majorino’s back in the Veronica Mars fold.

With filming just a couple of days away, the cast now stands at 11.

Thomas first came into contact with Tina back in 1996 when she sent him a letter asking about his novel for a book report she was doing. And when it came time to cast his TV series, Tina immediately sprang to mind to play Mac. Thomas sent out an email to his Kickstarter backers (of which I’m one) explaining his history with Tina and welcoming her to the cast:

“When we began shooting Veronica Mars, I asked our casting director to track down Tina. I wanted to find out what she was up to. I learned she had just finished an indie with good buzz that was going to Sundance. The director of that indie with good buzz was a gentleman named Jared Hess, who had been a camera operator on a short film I’d directed. During the shoot, Jared had shown me some footage — five or six minutes – of a curly-haired boy dragging a GI Joe behind a school bus. He said he was hoping to make a feature film out of it. It sounded like lunacy to me — how was this going to stretch to 90 minutes?

The film turned out to be Napoleon Dynamite. I’ve never trusted my sensibilities since.

I really wanted Tina in Veronica Mars. To say I wrote Mac with Tina in mind would be an understatement. I wrote Mac for Tina, and Tina only. Veronica needed a female friend, and a Q to her Bond. Tina felt like just the sort of girl that Veronica would like and respect. I couldn’t be more pleased that she’ll be with us for the movie.”
