‘The Legend of Ochi’ Review: Like ET, If Elliott Were Kind of a Jerk

The Legend of Ochi Review

A24 has branched out and away from the genres they’re best known for—horror and quirky dramas—with The Legend of Ochi, a fantasy adventure that strives to be similar to the family adventure films of the 1980s, such as E.T. and Gremlins.

The film opens with a shot of a dark island in the Black Sea and a voice-over from young Yuri (Helena Zengel, News of the World) talking about life on the island and how her people fear and hunt the deadly animals known as the Ochi. Yuri’s father, Maxim (Willem Dafoe, Nosferatu), trains her brother Petro (Finn Wolfhard, Stranger Things) and a group of teenage boys how to hunt the creatures.

After a hunt that goes horribly wrong, Yuri, upset with what she witnessed, walks into the wilderness and finds a wounded baby Ochi lost and separated from its mother. After carefully interacting with the frightened little animal, Yuri tells it, “It’s okay. I won’t hurt you,” and surprisingly quickly gains the creature’s trust.

Yuri secretly brings it back home and treats its wound, but her brother hears the noises it makes. She realizes they can’t stay, so she packs her backpack and climbs out the window to take the baby to its mother.

Maxim looks for his daughter the next morning when she misses breakfast, and after finding blood and Ochi animal fur, he assumes she’s been kidnapped. Worried, Maxim takes off with Petro and the other boys to find her.

So begins a long and arduous journey through the wilderness for Yuri and her little friend that will change everyone’s lives forever.

The Legend of Ochi is a fantasy adventure with beautiful visuals and wonderful puppetry bringing the little baby Ochi to life, complete with a sweet and scrappy personality. It’s in the character development, or lack thereof, and the emotional connections that the film fails.

16-year-old German actress Helena Zengel portrays Yuri as a shy, inquisitive, and, unfortunately, smug brat. Even though her quest is righteous, her treatment and interactions with everyone around her come off as insulting and condescending. She is an unlikable child hero.

Willem Dafoe once again delivers an over-the-top performance as Maxim, Yuri’s father who is desperate to find his child as well as win her love. It’s obvious early on in the film during the hunt that he’s trying to forge a connection with her and really bond. He’s the second best thing about the film.

As Petro, the older brother who, according to Yuri, is only “nice to her when no one is looking,” Finn Wolfhard’s talents are wasted. His character lacks depth and any genuine emotions, and he doesn’t have any chemistry with Zengel. They’re not convincing as siblings.

Where the film is strongest is in the stunning cinematography of the island and the design of the baby Ochi, which looks like a cross between Baby Yoda in The Mandalorian and little Gizmo from Gremlins. This is not, however, enough to make the film worthwhile. Sadly, it fails to capture the heart and emotion needed to truly care and connect with Yuri and baby Ochi.

LEGO Masters Season 5: Imagination, design, and creativity are brought to life when teams of LEGO enthusiasts go head-to-head, with infinite possibilities and an unlimited supply of LEGO bricks. Once again, teams of two will compete against each other in even more ambitious brick-building challenges—including a masquerade party and a colossal wedding cake challenge, with additional episodes celebrating iconic IPs including Star Wars, Wicked, and Batman—to be crowned the country’s most talented amateur LEGO builders.

In each episode, Arnett, alongside expert Brickmasters Amy Corbett and Jamie Berard, will encourage the builders, introduce incredible challenges, and put their creativity and skills to the test. The competing pairs who impress the judges the most will progress to the next round, until the finale, during which the top teams will face off for a $100,000 cash prize, the ultimate LEGO trophy, and the grand title of LEGO Masters.

MasterChef: Dynamic Duos: MasterChef enters its 15th season with a brand-new theme… Dynamic Duos! This season, Gordon Ramsay and renowned restaurateur Joe Bastianich return, alongside new judge James Beard Award nominee Chef Tiffany Derry, who will bring her no-nonsense point of view to the table. For the first time in MasterChef history, pairs of home cooks will participate together in hopes of becoming America’s next MasterChefs. From married and dating couples to mothers and daughters, siblings, best friends, and even divorcees—relationships are tested in some of the toughest challenges to date.

Plus, to make things even more difficult, the dreaded Pressure Test makes an intimidating return. In the end, only one Dynamic Duo will be awarded the grand prize of $250,000, the MasterChef trophy and the title of MasterChefs!

Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service: In a Gordon Ramsay series first, Chef Ramsay will venture into struggling restaurants under the cover of night. With the help of a secret source on the inside, he’ll gather raw, unfiltered evidence and get a 360-degree view of the major issues facing each restaurant. This insider will not only remain a secret to the staff but will also help Ramsay infiltrate the restaurant after-hours for a dramatic nighttime black light kitchen investigation that reveals more filth and grossness than ever before.

By the time Ramsay reveals his identity, it will be too late for staff to cover up their culinary crimes. Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service will be his toughest assignment yet, as he takes drastic measures to transform not only the restaurant but also the staff — because Gordon knows he can upgrade the menu and renovate the restaurant, but the most important change has to come from the people. Are the restaurant and staff willing to accept Gordon’s mission, or are they too far gone to be saved?

The Quiz with Balls: Hosted by actor and comedian Jay Pharoah, The Quiz with Balls pits brains against balls while combining a high-stakes quiz show with a large-scale physical competition. Each episode of The Quiz with Balls features two families competing for $100,000 in a “battle of the balls.” Standing on a high platform over a glistening pool, they must all work together as they face a multiple-choice quiz, during which each answer is allocated to a spot with a giant ball positioned up behind it.

If the correct answer is chosen, the ball rolls down and stops just before colliding with the player. If the answer is wrong, the massive ball rapidly descends and mercilessly launches them into the pool below. The more players each team loses, the harder the questions get. The longer they last, the more money they bank, until one “dry” family member plays the final round for The Quiz with Balls’ $100,000 Grand Prize.

The 1% Club: The 1% Club, hosted by Joel McHale, is a unique, compelling, and funny entertainment show that tests the nation’s intelligence, based on a scientific survey. It’s a chance to test how your brain works through a series of questions — all of which have a right answer but can also lead to a series of entertaining wrong answers along the way.

Whether you’re a contestant vying for the cash prize or a viewer playing with your friends and family, answer enough questions correctly, and you could earn yourself a place in the 1% Club: an elite group of people who can honestly say they’ve outwitted 99% of the population.

The Snake: Befriend. Betray. Or Be Gone. FOX’s all-new, wholly owned “social survival of the fittest” competition series, The Snake, hosted by comedian Jim Jefferies, is an unmatched battle of plotting, scheming, and strategy. The Snake assembles 15 masters of manipulation from various persuasive professions with unique skill sets to compete in an outrageous array of challenges and twists—all of which help contestants slither toward becoming that week’s Snake, the most powerful position in the game and ultimate decider of who stays and who goes.

The Snake is social survival of the fittest, where each contestant must leverage their unique skills, training, and powers of persuasion as they face a multitude of challenges designed to showcase the traits needed to be successful in the game. The winner of each challenge becomes The Snake, earning control of The Saving Ceremony, an explosive, chain reaction elimination where it’s not about who wants you gone, but who is willing to save you. The Snake doesn’t just hinge on winning challenges—it’s about winning people over. The social aspect of the game never stops—connections are everything, whether you’re making friends, faking friends or sparking romantic connections.

Promises are put to the test during the Saving Ceremony, as players do everything in their power to avoid being picked last by The Snake, hoping to escape elimination. Every week is a fresh start with a new gauntlet and a new Snake. In the end, only one contestant will get within striking distance of the $100,000 grand prize.

Jason also relies on his relationship with master hacker Wayne Pascal, both on and off the clock.

As the third season begins, MPU is tasked with cases ranging from a missing female collegiate rowing team who disappeared while on the water, a missing street artist due to donate his rare bone marrow to save his dying brother, and Nikki’s ongoing and dangerous association with Irish mob boss Charlie McGannon. But the most harrowing case to date is when MPU must band together in a race to find one of their own. Now more than ever, together, the team must work to find the missing or abducted and help reunite them with their loved ones before it’s too late.

‘The Stolen Girl’ Episode 2 Recap: Who is Elisa and Why is Fred Acting So Suspicious?

The Stolen Girl Episode 2 Recap
Holliday Grainger, Beatrice Cohen and Robyn Betteridge in ‘The Stolen Girl’ episode 2 (Disney/Matt Squire)

The second episode of Freeform’s suspenseful limited series The Stolen Girl opens with Lucia (Beatrice Campbell) and Josephine (Robyn Betteridge) running around playing hide-and-seek and dressing up in Rebecca’s clothes on the night of the sleepover. (This is a recap, so there are spoilers ahead!)

Rebecca (Holliday Grainger) has Josephine get ready for bed, but Lucia stays behind. She asks her about her father being a lawyer, and Lucia sadly admits it makes her mother, Elisa, worry and get scared about locking the doors. Lucia suddenly becomes sleepy.

After encouraging Lucia to lie down on the couch, a man appears at the front door. He carries Lucia out of the house, placing her in a suitcase in a car.

While Elisa and Fred’s son, Georgie, is playing, someone slips a note addressed to the Blix family through the mail slot. Georgie takes it upstairs to where Elisa (Denise Gough) is sleeping in Lucia’s bed. Georgie drops the letter while climbing onto the bed and quickly forgets all about it as it hits the floor. Elisa awakes to see her mother-in-law has returned.

Things are still tense between Elisa and Fred (Jim Sturgess). (The first episode revealed that Fred was speaking with another woman.) When he asks where she is going, Elisa coolly responds, “For a drive. I’ve got my phone.”

During her drive, Elisa replays all the moments with Rebecca in her head. She then posts the picture of Lucia and Josephine (the one Rebecca didn’t want her to take), asking if anyone recognizes the other girl.

Selma (Ambika Mod) is interviewing a man about his pig when she receives a notification about Elisa’s post. She calls her boss, Kaleb (Michael Workeye), and matter-of-factly tells him she wants to interview Elisa. There’s a fat chance of that happening right now because the police specifically stated she is not doing interviews. Selma wants to try and persuade Elisa to agree to an interview. Moving on to Elisa’s social media presence, Selma points out that she posted all the time for the past seven years. Before that, there are no posts. There’s nothing from her younger days in school.

The Stolen Girl Episode 2 Recap Denise Gough

DI Shona Sinclair (Bronagh Waugh) informs the Blixes that she is looking into everything and has very little to go on. Sinclair isn’t thrilled that Elisa released that photo of Lucia and Josephine. The police should be controlling the information released to the public. Elisa counters with, “It’s essential that we keep Lucia in people’s minds.”

While Elisa is doing cross-stitching, she notices Georgie is no longer in the room. After a brief search, she locates Georgie upstairs, which leads her to discovering the letter.

“We have Lucia. She is safe, but not for long. If you ever, ever want to see your beautiful little girl again, it’s going to cost you a lot of money.” The demand goes on to state they have 48 hours.

A man in prison named Marcus Turner (Xavier Samuel) receives a package. The package contains a newspaper clipping about Lucia’s disappearance. He adds it to the others he has been hiding in his pillowcase.

DI Sinclair shows footage from their doorbell camera to the Brixes to see if they recognize the man who delivered the letter. It’s difficult to tell when there is a hood and baseball cap blocking his face. They ask Fred if this could be someone related to his work. Elisa wants to pay the ransom, but DI Sinclair strongly advises against it.

Selma knows about the ransom letter; not only that, but she paid a police officer for the letter.

Elisa asks Fred if they could get the ransom money. He assures her that they can, although he doesn’t look so sure of himself. She presses him further, wanting to know if they could get it quickly. Fred claims he’s looking into it. He leaves for work despite Elisa begging him not to go.

Selma confronts Elisa, informing her she knows about the ransom letter. Elisa is shocked to learn that Selma knows about it. Selma insists she can help her.

Elisa attempts to secure a loan for the ransom by borrowing money against their house. She’s once again blindsided by her husband when she’s told by the loan officer that there is already a loan taken out on their home. Fred forged her signature, and it’s no surprise he isn’t answering her calls.

It turns out DC Daniel Coolidge (Forrest Bothwell) is the one who gave Selma the ransom letter. He now gives her a still shot of the man who dropped off the ransom note.

The Stolen Girl Episode 2 Recap Jim Sturgess

Meanwhile, Fred’s client, Stephen Bailey (Nathan Turner), wants to back out from testifying. He has been snitching to the police about a drug gang. When Bailey leaves, Fred follows him. Elisa calls DI Sinclair to inform her Fred is missing. Sinclair immediately starts investigating.

Selma browses the website of the company she works for, reading the comments made about Lucia. One woman in particular spams their site about Lucia. After researching the woman, Selma finds a photo online of her wearing the same hat as the person who delivered the ransom note.

Selma returns to Elisa and informs her she knows who the woman is; she is a serial hoaxer. Elisa opens up to Selma, which gives Selma an opening to not only tell Elisa she believes they were targeted but also that she can’t find any information on Elisa herself. “Who were you before you became Mrs. Blix?” That question leads to a door being shut in her face.

Fred confronts Stephen about how suddenly the week his daughter is kidnapped, he can’t remember anything. He demands to know if he was threatened. Stephen adamantly denies it. Fred then attacks him while accusing him of having something to do with his daughter’s kidnapping. Stephen continues to deny any involvement.

While sifting through CCTV footage, DS Lizzie Walker (Layo-Christina Akinlude) discovers a video from five days earlier taken at a gas station in France. Lucia is seen running from a car, and then a man captures her and takes her back to the car.

As all of this is going down, DI Sinclair finds Fred’s car abandoned with the keys inside.

While Fred wanders the street aimlessly, Marcus—the man in prison—puts a letter in an envelope addressed to Elisa.

Episode two ends with Lucia being delivered to Rebecca and Josephine. When Lucia asks for her mother, Rebecca ignores her and says, “Welcome home, Lily Rose.”

‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Finds Its Haymitch and Lenore

Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping has found its Haymitch Abernathy and Lenore Dove Baird. Joseph Zada (We Were Liars) has been cast as District 12 Tribute Haymitch Abernathy, and Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2) will star as Haymitch’s girlfriend, Lenore.

The upcoming film, based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novel, is targeting a November 20, 2026 theatrical release. Francis Lawrence is directing and Billy Ray adapted Collins’ novel.

The Hunger Games franchise has long been a launching pad for remarkable young actors, and Jo and Whitney carry that legacy forward with incredible heart, depth, and fire,” stated Erin Westerman, co-president, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “After auditioning hundreds of gifted performers from around the world, these two stood out—not just for their talent, but for the emotional truth they brought to these iconic roles. Haymitch has always been a fan favorite, and his origin story is one of the most anticipated in the franchise. His relationship with Lenore Dove is deeply woven into the emotional history of Panem. We can’t wait for fans to experience the story that shaped one of the most compelling characters in the series.”

Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are on board as producers, and Cameron MacConomy will executive produce.

“Deb Zane and Dylan Jury oversaw an exhaustive (and exhausting!) search to find a young actor with the skill and imagination to embody young Haymitch,” said Jacobson. “Jo prepared like crazy and stole our hearts. Then Whitney took our breath away as Lenore Dove. When we put the two of them together, it was one of those magical casting moments when you know your search has led you home.”

Collins’ The Hunger Games prequel was published on March 18, 2025 and sold 1.5 million during its first week in release. Per Lionsgate, “Sunrise on the Reaping revisits the world of Panem twenty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.”

‘Predator: Badlands’ Teaser Trailer: Elle Fanning Teams Up with a Predator

Predator: Badlands takes the franchise into a previously unexplored direction, making the bizarre creature the hero of the story who teams up with a human-looking android from the Weyland-Yutani corporation (from the Alien franchise). The first teaser trailer shows Elle Fanning (A Complete Unknown) working with a Predator, not trying to kill it.

Director Dan Trachtenberg (Prey) recently spoke with Empire about the new film’s twist and pushing the franchise’s boundaries. “The creature is front and centre, leading the charge,” explained Trachtenberg. “He’s still badass, but there’s something there that touches you emotionally, too. Creating a character you connect with, but are also super-intimidated by, has been challenging. But exciting.”

Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi also stars, and Trachtenberg, John Davis, Marc Toberoff, Ben Rosenblatt, and Brent O’Connor serve as producers.

Predator: Badlands, which stars Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, is set in the future on a remote planet, where a young Predator, outcast from his clan, finds an unlikely ally in Thia and embarks on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary,” reads 20th Century Studios’ synopsis.

Predator: Badlands will open in theaters on November 7, 2025.
