‘Game of Thrones’ Season 5 Episode 4 Recap: “The Sons of the Harpy”

Sunday night, nine o’clock, time to settle in for Game of Thrones season five episode four: “The Sons of the Harpy.” Has it been a week already? Welcome back to “Days of Our Seven Kingdoms!” Seriously, this is an action-packed episode. Bashing, smashing, beating, and stabbing galore – and none of it done by anyone named Bolton or Baratheon.

When last we saw Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), he was being dwarf-napped by Ser Jorah Mormant (Iain Glen). We open with the latter stealing a boat and tossing Tyrion aboard…but where’s it going? (I posited that Jorah was taking him to Dany as a “please forgive me, I’ll always love you Khaleesi” present. My brother opined that he was taking him to Cersei for the bounty. Both are pretty good guesses. I’m sticking with The Mother of Dragons.)

Meanwhile, Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), and Bronn (Jerome Flynn) are also on a boat – a merchant ship. Theirs, we know, is headed to Dorne. Bronn is rhapsodizing about Dorne, the women, and their propensity for er…fighting. I’ve missed these two characters. Bronn misses Tyrion. Jaime is regretting his decision to set Tyrion free. He goes so far as to deny the deed. Killing Dad obviously wasn’t part of the plan.

The Small Council is fretting over money. The Iron Bank of Braavos has called the Crown’s note. They want at least 10 percent of the outstanding debt, which we know the Lannisters don’t have (because Tywin told us in season 3…or was it 4?). Cersei sends her Master of Coin, who happens to be her father-in-law Mace Tyrell (Roger Ashton Griffiths) to negotiate better terms with the bank. She also sends Meryn Trant (Ian Beattie) to “guard” him. Might be the last we see of ole Mace.

Anyway, Cersei (Lena Headey), who last week was behaving in an un-Cersei-like manner, has apparently gotten her Cersei-ness back. Her next mission is to go and see the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce) again. She starts going on about “justice” (I do not think that word means what she thinks it means) and tells him she wants him to bring back the “Faith Militant,” the military arm of the Faith of the Seven.

Religion has come to Westeros in a big way and it looks a lot like the Spanish Inquisition. The Sparrows rampage through the streets and smash all of the vestiges of sin that they can find e.g. the beer and wine casks, Littlefinger’s brothel (that’s what he gets for leaving the country), and then grab Loras (Finn Jones) because of the love that dare not speak its name. So Cersei’s plan kills two birds (not sparrows) with one stone: Littlefinger and Margaery – by way of Loras. Before they even find him, they went for the homosexuals, so we knew he was next. If he weren’t the Queen’s brother, he’d be dead, but he’s just been taken prisoner by weird cousin Lancel (Eugene Simon) who’s just voluntarily had the Sign of the Sparrow (which looks overtly Satanic, IMHO) carved into his forehead.

Boy-King Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) tries to get his new brother-in-law back, but of course his mother, as well as the Sparrows at the Sept, aren’t letting go. His new bride Margaery (Natalie Dormer) is not happy. Poor Tommen. He’s so badly outmatched by everyone around him.

On to the Wall to catch up with the folks at Castle Black. Queen Selyse the Dour (Tara Fitzgerald), again bemoaning the fact that she didn’t give Stannis a son, dismisses Jon Snow (Kit Harington) as “a bastard by some tavern slut.” Stannis the Wise (Stephen Dillane) mysteriously intones, “Perhaps, but that wasn’t Ned Stark’s way.” (Dude, the internet has been discussing this conundrum for four seasons. Where have you been?) Then Melisandre (Carice van Houten) gets into a staring contest with Queen Sourpuss. Guess who blinks first.

Sam (John Bradley) is acting as Jon’s secretary and he seems to be walking on eggshells. The reason? Other than last week’s unpleasantness, Sam tells him they need to ask The Warden of the North for reinforcements. That’s Roose “MC at the Red Wedding” Bolton. Even Melisandre is trying to convince him to ride out to Winterfell, which is really a pretext before trying to get into his knickers. Jon Snow knows enough to resist because this woman is dangerous, but more importantly, he wants to try to stay on the high road now that he’s found his way again. (More shades of Ned.) He says it’s because he’s sworn to celibacy (and also because he still loves Ygritte). Melisandre actually quotes Ygritte as she leaves! Jon probably felt an icy finger up his spine.

Stannis the Grumpy has a lovely moment with his sweet little dragon girl, Shireen (Kerry Ingram), who asks if he’s ashamed of her. He tells her a convoluted story about a cursed doll that caused her “Greyscale” sickness and how he saved her life. Touched, she wraps her arms around him. We know that was his way of telling her he loves her, but King Warm and Fuzzy still won’t return the hug.

Sansa (Sophie Turner) is roaming the crypt at Winterfell, probably the only place she feels both at home and safe from the psychopaths upstairs. Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) shows up to tell her he’s going back to King’s Landing and leaving her there. But first, he gives Sansa a family history lesson about Rhaegar Targaryen, son of the Mad King, and his love for Sansa’s aunt Lyanna, which led to Robert Baratheon’s rebellion. Littlefinger seems to be romanticizing the facts (leaving all of us to wonder where this will fit in and when. We know it will, eventually, but the GoT writers are tricksy and it could be next season), but Sansa deadpans, “Yes, he chose her. And then he kidnapped her and raped her.”

Anyway, Sansa is naturally a tad freaked out by Littlefinger’s news so he reveals his elaborate scheme, which hinges on the idea that Stannis will “probably” show up soon, since “winter is coming” and he’ll need to leave before the snow flies. So, since either Stannis will kill the Boltons, in which case she won’t have to marry Ramsey, or he won’t, in which case she’ll marry Ramsey but she’ll still be okay because she’s a Stark, plus she learned her tricks from the best. Sansa is not comforted.

Jaime and Bronn are camping on the Dornish coast when Bronn kills a snake before it can kill Jaime. More foreshadowing?! Then some Dornish soldiers show up. Bronn gives them fake names, but the Dornish are a suspicious lot. Of course, a battle ensues. Left-handed Jaime is getting his ass kicked – until his “useless” fake right hand saves him.

Game of Thrones Season 5 Episode 4 Recap
Keisha Castle-Hughes, Jessica Henwick, and Rosabell Laurenti Sellers in ‘Game of Thrones’ (Photo: Helen Sloan/ HBO)

While Bronn and Jaime are burying bodies, Ellaria (Indira Varma) meets up with the badass Sand Snakes – and we finally meet Oberyn’s daughters, Obara (Keisha Castle-Hughes), Nymeria (Jessica Henwick) and Tyene (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers), at least one of whom is also Elleria’s (Tyene I think) and they decide that not only will they avenge Oberyn, they’re going start a war… by killing Myrcella Lannister. The Prince of Dorne is probably not going to like this.

Tyrion and Jorah are sailing on their stolen boat, (and I win!) heading east toward Meereen; Tyrion deduces Jorah’s identity and the nature of his plan. He’s a little surprised. He figured Jorah would sell him to Cersei. When Tyrion asks why the Khaleesi wouldn’t just execute Jorah and welcome the guy who killed her enemies to court rather than the other way around, even Jorah appears to admit he has a point. Jorah’s response is to whack Tyrion upside the head. That seemed a little out of character. I expected Jorah to use his words, but maybe he’s intimidated by Tyrion. He’s probably been through hell the past however many months.

Up in her pyramid, Dany (Emilia Clarke), Daario Naharis (Michiel Huisman), and Ser Barristan Selmy (Ian McEhinney) are listening as Hizdahr zo Loraq (Joel Fry) is telling her, yet again, that the key to stopping the insurgency is to allow him to promote his to-the-death Gladiator fights.

In yet another story about a character who’s here-to-fore barely been a blip in a historical flashback, Ser Barristan tells Dany that her eldest brother Rhaegar was a fun-loving and generous man who sang for money and then donated it to charity (usually). Charmed, Dany sends Ser Barristan out to sing.

Well that was a nice image, which should tell us that the next thing we see will be horrible. And it was.
The episode ends in a protracted battle between The Sons of the Harpy and the Unsullied. The Unsullied are massacred and soon only Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) is left standing (barely). As the Harpys close in, Ser Barristan shows up. The two of them put up a good fight, but there are just too many of them. It’s a blood bath, with the walls of the alley literally painted with the stuff. Ser Barristan falls and appears dead. Grey Worm falls next to him, but he was breathing at the last fade out.

Damn!

Memorable lines from “The Sons of the Harpy”:

“Wars teach people to obey the sword, not the gods.” – High Sparrow

“We can’t watch the wall with 50 men.” – Samwell Tarley

“You know nothing Jon Snow.” – Melisandre

“You are the Princess Shireen of House Baratheon…and you are my daughter.” – Stannis Baratheon

“Let’s speak somewhere the dead can’t hear us.” – Littlefinger

“Even the most dangerous men can be outmaneuvered and you’ve learned from the very best.” – Littlefinger

“Everyone looks happy from up here.” – Danaerys

“All men must die. Not all men die in glory.” – Hizdhar zo Loraq

Writer/director David Ayer (End of Watch) has once again taken to Twitter to reveal photos of the cast of the upcoming action movie Suicide Squad. The new photos feature some of the key players, but not Jared Leto’s Joker (Ayer previously released a photo of Leto in make-up).

Among those in the group shot are Adam Beach as Slipknot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Cara Delevigne as Enchantress, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, and Jay Hernandez as El Diablo. And Ayer released the first full-length shot of Smith in the Deadshot costume.

The Warner Bros Pictures film is currently shooting in Toronto and also features Viola Davis, Scott Eastwood, Raymond Olubowale, Alex Meraz, Jim Parrack, and Common. Suicide Squad will open in theaters on August 5, 2016.

‘Outlander’ Season 1 Episode 13 Recap: “The Watch”

Starz’s Outlander‘s 13th episode of season one (“The Watch”) is one that greatly deviated from the book, so I won’t spend too much time on differences. The Watch didn’t inhabit Lallybroch in the book. They did end up with Jamie (Sam Heughan) after he gave the child-abusing Scott an attitude adjustment. Jamie mentioned it to Claire (Caitriona Balfe) when he woke her up while drunk in episode 12, “Lallybroch.” We ended the previous episode with a musket in Jamie’s face. That is exactly where we pick up this episode. Musket still pointed within inches of Jamie’s face. Does he know how to rub people the wrong way or what?!

Jenny (Laura Donnelly) enters and tells the man to put down the gun, that Jamie is her cousin. And now we are back to Jamie McTavish as a name. The guys of The Watch ask for dinner, so Jenny runs down to the kitchen to get it started. Jamie follows, mad as a hornet, and of course they start fussing. Claire and Ian (Steven Cree) always have to bring these two hot-heads to reason. Sound familiar in anyone else’s house? Jamie is boiling mad the entire time The Watch is around. There is one of their number in particular who seems to send Jamie’s ire into orbit. Rightly so, he is an arse of the highest order.

While Jamie is trying to shoe his horse, the damned fool puts a wagon of hay on fire with his pipe…ON PURPOSE! Our strapping, aptly redheaded, hero kicks his butt in fine fashion for that. He also gets a few licks in on a few of the others. It comes around to Jamie holding a pistol to one of their heads before it is said and done. The leader, Taran MacQuarrie (Douglas Henshall), who appears to be a good fella, calms them all down and extinguishes the situation. He even pays Jamie for the hay that was burnt, but later on in the episode.

As Jamie and MacQuarrie get to know one another, they kind of get to the same understanding Ian was trying to tell Jamie about. That the leader is a good guy all things considered and is not unreasonable in his request as well as in the protection he provides. Jamie, Ian, and MacQuarrie bond a bit over French war stories. Ah, the life of the soldier. And then, enter Horrocks (Lochlann O’Mearain)! This is not good at all. Horrocks tries to extort money from Jamie to keep silent about the price on his head. Gotta love the ethics of a British deserter. This is also a substantial deviation from the book.

Outlander Season 1 Episode 13 Recap

Claire and Jenny are outside doing the wash, talking about Jamie and Ian being thick as brothers when they were growing up. As a baby will do, they come when they want to, so just then Jenny’s water breaks and her labor begins. They go inside and Claire discovers that the baby is breach, not head down as it should be. Claire and Jenny have a much more cordial relationship now, instead of two predators circling the prize…Jamie…as it was in the last episode. To take her mind off things, Claire has Jenny tell her what being pregnant feels like. The Scots have such a way to explain things.

Jamie and Ian are fixing a wagon outside, the one partially burned thanks to that idiot Watchman. He tells Ian about Horrocks and how he knows that Jamie has the price on his head. Ian tells Jamie to use money they had put away, the estate’s savings, to buy his silence. Jamie doesn’t want to do it and is relaying all this to Claire later. He feels he let her down in having to give away the future he thought he could secure for her and their children. Claire tells Jamie that it is really she that has let him down. She tells him that she doesn’t think she can have children.

Claire admits that she and Frank tried before she came through the stones, without success. It is a blow for Jamie, but ever the understanding man he says it might be for the best. He is seeing his sister go through so much and says, “I can bear pain myself, but I canna bear yours. It would take more strength than I have” – one of the favorite lines from the book. It is still a blow to him, of course. He makes a valiant effort in not showing it to Claire.

Jamie then goes to meet Horrocks to give him the money Ian told him to give. Of course Horrocks tries to extort more. Jamie did go armed and was about to shoot him when a blade shows through Horrocks’s chest. Ian had come up behind Horrocks and stabbed him through the back. It might take a while, but that type of person does come to the end of their line if they don’t change their line in a better direction. Horrocks had no intention of doing so. Ian covered Jamie’s flank as he has always done.

Back we go to the laboring Jenny upstairs. Claire and Jenny are trying to bring this little lad or lass into the world. A contraction passes and Jenny pulls a little carved snake out of a drawer for Claire to give Jamie. Jenny found it she said. It was a present for Jamie when he was around age five from their big brother Willie who had died of smallpox. Jenny also told Claire how their mother, Ellen, died two years after Willie while in childbirth. That message hits home since Jenny is in the same place and with a breach baby no less. Claire is determined to help Jenny through this, alive.

The next morning (Jenny is still in labor, by the way) the men go down to breakfast. MacQuarrie brings up the subject of Horrocks. He pretty much corners Jamie and Ian with the points that don’t add up to why Horrocks is missing. Jamie admits he ran him through with a blade before Ian could say anything. The Watch leader admits he is glad about it. But that doesn’t let Jamie off the hook just yet. The Watch is now down a man so they force Jamie into riding with them and taking Horrocks’ place for the raid they were going to do. Ian says he will go too, ever the man to cover Jamie in a fight.

Upstairs they tell Jenny and Claire. Both are none too happy with the idea, but Jenny tells them to get on with it and come back quickly. Claire tells Jamie he had better hurry back or she will follow him and drag is his butt back by his thick red curls. After a classic passionate Jamie/Claire kiss, he takes his leave. Off in the soft Scottish weather they go, that is to say in the rain. The Watch leader and Jamie have a chat about Jamie riding with them more permanently. Jamie asks, “Or what? You’ll turn me over?” In the show, MacQuarrie says they won’t turn Jamie over. In the book, they do exactly that. The group ends up riding into an ambush in just the place Horrocks says they could set one for the British. They are boxed in from all sides by the British and fired upon.

We then return to Jenny after giving birth to their new wee lass. Jenny had thought the entire time that she would have a brother for wee Jamie (Aaron Wright). As Jenny and Claire are sitting watching the road for the men to come home after being gone three days, Jenny gave Claire the bracelets that belonged to her mother. Those of us who have read the books know the person who gave them to Ellen. Jenny tells Claire that only Ellen knew who gave them to her. They were a wedding present.

Just then two men come hobbling in the gate to Lallybroch. It is Ian and one of the Watchmen. They tell the women that most of the men were killed in the ambush. Claire is asking frantically where Jamie is. Ian said the Redcoats captured Jamie. Claire looks out down the road and the episode ends. The next episode is aptly titled “The Search.” As Claire said, she would go find him so… Tulach Ard!!!!

Josh Trank Leaves the ‘Star Wars’ Stand-Alone Film

It appears one of the untitled Star Wars stand-alone films has lost its director. Josh Trank (Fantastic Four, Chronicle) was announced as director of the second Star Wars spin-off back in June 2014, but today he revealed he’s left the film to work on original projects.

Trank posted a statement on the Star Wars site:

“After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I’m making a personal decision to move forward on a different path. I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities. That said, the Star Wars universe has always been one of my biggest influences, and I couldn’t be more excited to witness its future alongside my millions of fellow Star Wars fans. I want to thank my friends Kathleen Kennedy, Kiri Hart, Simon Kinberg, and everyone at Lucasfilm and Disney for the amazing opportunity to have been a part of this. May the Force be with you all.”

And Lucasfilm VP of Development Kiri Hart posted an official response to Trank’s exit: “It was a privilege to collaborate with Josh. We are grateful for the energy and love of Star Wars that he brought to the process, and we wish him all the best.”

The second stand-alone Star Wars film is still moving forward and will enter theaters in 2018.

Dominic Sherwood will be joined in the Shadowhunters cast by Alberto Rosende and Emeraude Toubia as just announced by ABC Family. The new series is based on Cassandra Clare’s bestselling The Mortal Instruments book series and will be executive produced by Ed Decter and McG. McG (Terminator Salvation) is also on board to direct the series’ first episode.

Alberto Rosende will play Simon, Emeraude Toubia will play Isabelle Lightwood, and Dominic Sherwood was previously announced as Jace.

The Plot:

Shadowhunters follows 18-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend, Simon. Now living among faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past and what her future may hold.

Intelligent, very handsome in a non-calculated kind of way, Simon is Clary Fray’s long-time best friend. He’s the first to find humor in any situation. An accounting student by day, Simon spends his free time performing in a band. His loyalty and feelings for Clary are tested as he fights alongside her on an epic journey.

Isabelle is an exotic-looking, model-beautiful Shadowhunter. An expert with her whip, she’s as lethal as she is attractive. A trained fighter who can kick ass in high heels, Isabelle’s one weakness is her choice in men – always going for the bad boy.
