‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ “Melinda” Recap – Season 2, Episode 17

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s “Melinda” is the episode that answers a lot of questions for Skye. It also answers a lot of questions for the audience about Melinda May through a series of flashbacks. Here’s a detailed recap of season two’s episode 17, which aired on April 14, 2015:

Skye (Chloe Bennet) is still at the Inhuman compound. Her mother, Jiaying (Dichen Lachman), takes her to the mountaintop for a bit of training, which includes causing an avalanche on a nearby mountain. Later, when Skye is telling her a little about growing up in foster care, her mother finally confesses who she really is. She begs Skye not to tell anyone. It turns out that her reason for keeping their mother/daughter bond a secret dovetails into May’s story.

Meanwhile, elsewhere on the compound, Raina (Ruth Negga) is trying to come to terms with her transformation. She is in constant pain and feels like she received no gifts when she went through the mist. She is desperate to leave the compound, but Gordon insists on keeping her there for her safety. She describes her nightmares to Lincoln, who is sympathetic to her.

Back at SHIELD, May (Ming-Na Wen) brings Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) in on what she learned from Bobbi (Adrianne Palicki) and Rodriguez (Edward James Olmos). The more they dig into Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) files, the more secrets they find. From the looks of things, Coulson is readying an army of gifted people. May tells Simmons that they have to break into Fury’s toolbox to find out what’s going on. Simmons doesn’t reveal to May that she handed the toolbox off to Fitz when he left SHIELD. (Uh oh!)

[Flashback] May and her ex-husband, Andrew (Blair Underwood), are happily married. She is getting ready to go out on a mission with Coulson. They are planning to start a family. These scenes were especially poignant because we know what her future holds, and it doesn’t include Andrew or a family.

Coulson and May arrive in Bahrain, which we’ve heard before is the site of something big that went down and earned May the nickname “The Cavalry.” They meet with their target, a gifted woman who is super strong. However, she is not interested in getting any help from them. While Coulson is talking to the woman, May sees a little girl run through the square. Just as things go bad with the Russian woman, May sees a few men take the little girl hostage.

Coulson sends in his tactical team. May and Coulson listen over the comm. The team breaks in, but then they go silent. May and Coulson have no idea what has happened. They decide that May, the special, should get them out. She breaks in and starts taking down one guard after another. She finally finds her team in a locked room, but they are in a trance. They try to hurt her saying, “I want your pain.” She retreats and locks them back up.

Finally, she spots the blonde Russian woman, the gifted. They fight. She is surrounded by the henchman but she takes them out. Finally, she kills the Russian. She assumes that because the Russian woman is dead that the others will snap out of it. But she was wrong. The little girl emerges from her hiding place, and it becomes terribly clear that she is the one controlling everyone.

May realizes what she’s going to have to do. She is horrified (and so are we). She begs the little girl to give up, but she won’t. The scene cuts to Coulson out in the van, and we hear a gunshot off-screen.

The tactical team starts pouring out of the building. They are amazed that May was able to take down so many men. We hear them say that “the cavalry” arrived after all. That is how she got her nickname. Finally, May comes out. She is a wreck. She collapses, sobbing on Coulson.

[Present Day] At the compound, Skye’s mother asks her for one favor. She tells Skye that if they have dinner with Cal (Kyle MacLachlan), her father, she will not ask for any more favors. They enter the dining area. Cal is beside himself with excitement. (I was worried he was going to explode and start a fight, but he didn’t.) He gives Skye a bouquet of daisies, which represent her real name, Daisy. They drink champagne, and Skye relaxes. She seems happy. Lincoln (Luke Mitchell) comes in and sees the scene. He realizes it is the same scene from a nightmare that Raina had described. Her gift is to see the future.

Elsewhere, Fitz (Iain de Caestecker) is being tailed by SHIELD agents. He is locked up in a bathroom, trying to break into Nick Fury’s toolbox. He succeeds and is able to contact Hunter (Nick Blood) and Coulson. He asks them if he can join them. They happily agree, and then they tell him they’ll help him lose the men following him.

‘Revolution’ Digital Comic Completes the TV Series’ Story

Revolution Story Finishes Up as a Comic Book
The ‘Revolution’ team

For fans of Revolution who are looking for answers as to how the show might have ended, Warner Bros Television and DC Comics will release a four chapter digital comic book that will wrap up the storylines left dangling with the series’ cancellation. Executive producers Eric Kripke, J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Rockne S. O’Bannon and Jon Favreau are behind the creation of the comic book that promises to answer questions about what happened following the season two finale, which turned out to also be the series finale.

David Reed and Ryan Parrott, Revolution the series’ writers, wrote the digital comic. Kripke, O’Bannon, Paul Grellong, David Rambo, Trey Callaway, Anne Cofell Saunders, Ben Edlund, Matt Pitts and Jim Barnes also worked on developing the story, and DC Comics’ artist Angel Hernandez illustrated the comic book.

The four chapters will be available on ComicBook.com on the following release dates:

Chapter 1 – Monday, May 4
Chapter 2 – Monday, May 18
Chapter 3 – Monday, June 1
Chapter 4 – Monday, June 15

Announcing the digital comics, Revolution creator/executive producer Eric Kripke wrote this message for fans:

Dear Revolutionaries, Patriots, and Soldiers of the Monroe Militia,

So first of all—thank you. Seriously. Sincerely. The loyalty you’ve shown REVOLUTION these past months has been touching and overwhelming—it’s meant more to me than you’ll ever know. And in case you were wondering—yes, we’ve been listening. We’ve read the tweets. We’ve seen the incredible petition. We’ve followed #RelocateRevolution. Please know that you’ve been heard.

And solely because of your efforts, we wanted to pay you back—to give you something fantastic. And while, unfortunately, we simply can’t make more episodes of the show (alas, there are financial realities we can’t overcome), we can do the next best thing. Which is end the story. On our terms. Exactly the way we would have.

So J.J., Jon and I are pleased and proud to announce the REVOLUTION endgame: a four-issue series coming soon from DC Comics. If you take a look at the attached photo, you’ll see that we brought back the entire writing staff to work on it. The band’s back together! (And if you study the photo closely, you’ll notice a certain young, plucky Matheson who also joined us). Everyone has generously agreed to work for little or no money. They’re doing it, because like you, they’re passionate about this story and want to see it end correctly.

So stay tuned. We’ve got lots of work to do. We’ll keep you posted—in the coming months, you can expect more details, sneak peeks, and early artwork. But Miles, Monroe, Rachel, Charlie, Aaron, Neville and the rest will return for the epic finale to the REVOLUTION storyline. We hope you’re as excited as we are.

And again—thank you. This is because of you. This is for you.

Much love,
Kripke

Graeme Manson Talks ‘Orphan Black’ Season 3, Male Clones, and Delphine’s Journey

Graeme Manson Interview on Orphan Black season 3

Co-creator/writer Graeme Manson promises another emotionally engaging season of Orphan Black when season three premieres on BBC America on April 18, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT. Discussing the new season while at WonderCon with cast members Kristian Bruun, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Dylan Bruce, Evelyne Brochu, and Jordan Gavaris, Manson revealed season three will start off with a bang. Episode one will introduce the first of Ari Millen’s clone characters, and the season will see other key characters put into difficult situations. “Sarah is in a situation that she would have never expected to have to pull off. I think Delphine, too, is in a very interesting and new place this season,” revealed Manson.

There’s been a five season plan for the critically acclaimed series in place since season one, but Manson says it’s really a loose master plan. “But I think that the arc of season three is loosely what we envisioned maybe not at the beginning of season one, but maybe by the beginning of season two. We knew we wanted to introduce male clones at the end of season two. Some of the revelations about that we already had. So, in one sense like that, it’s close to what we envisioned,” explained Manson. “On the other hand, we are always flexible enough to roll with the punches and be quick on our feet. For instance, we didn’t know that it was going to be Ari Millen’s character that was the male clone. That came about because we discovered a really fine actor and we decided not kill him. We decided that maybe it could be him and that the show would double back on itself and the revelation would come from our own cast rather than hiring someone new, which we kind of thought we would bring in a brand new person. But going back to our own cast and selecting Ari from that really helps draw it together.”

Asked if there’s a particular character who’s become even more interesting than he expected, Manson replied, “Yep. Kristian Bruun’s character Donnie. The moment when he pulled the trigger on Dr. Leekie, I think that’s when everybody was like, ‘Donnie rocks!’ And it was partly that moment and that discovery that gave us Alison and Donnie’s character arc as a couple for the third season, because we’d only seen them fractured and Donnie was a schlub and then he was an agent and then he was a liar, and then he’s back to being a schlub. But then they bond to protect their family. They come together over this slaying of Dr. Leekie, and now we get to see them together. We get to see Team Hendrix in all their perverted glory.”

For season three, Manson says it’s Delphine who’s been the most interesting character to write. “[She’s] very, very conflicted, revealing something much different than we’ve seen before, challenging the audience of what their expectations are of that character and what they want from that character versus what the character’s going to be able to give us. And a performance throughout the season that walks this tightrope of keeping this promise that she made in the second season that, ‘I will love all of your sisters equally,’ and having to go deeper into the beast in order to keep them safe. Making those sacrifices and not necessarily being a good guy to fulfill the promise,” said Manson.

“Also, Paul,” added Manson. “It’s kind of a similar character story for Paul where he’s even more of a double-agent and where does his heart lie? There’s really a nice journey with Paul this year discovering where his heart lies. Those were two very complex and very hard to write character lines that I think will play nicely – and very, very Orphan Black.”

And Manson admits that he actually agonizes over the pain he puts some of his Orphan Black characters through. “Even Helena who can hack it, who can take it. It’s like, ‘Are we just being too mean to Helena? Can we just give her a lollipop and make her feel better?’ So, yeah, we do agonize over it but that’s drama. The harder you make it on the characters, the greater the triumph if they can come out of it.”

Looking forward, Manson was asked if fans can expect a clone dance scene at the end of season three. Laughing, Manson said, “You can’t keep John Fawcett away from his giant clone scene. I can’t give it away, but yes we do do another great big clone scene in the finale. I’ve seen a cut of it and it’s pretty awesome.”

Dennis Quaid’s Freak Out is a Funny or Die Video

Video was released on April 14, 2015 of Dennis Quaid launching into an on-set tirade that would have made Christian Bale blush, and right away fingers were pointed at Jimmy Kimmel as being the mastermind behind the meltdown video. Quaid doesn’t have a reputation as an on-set diva, so prankster Kimmel was the logical source of the expletive-laden clip.

But, it turns out the Dennis Quaid freak-out video was made by Funny or Die.

They’ve just released the full video that’s definitely not safe for work, small children, cats, or zombies, and that shows Quaid going off on Dopey the D*ckhead.

Joel Courtney and Jon Fletcher Discuss ‘The Messengers’

The CW’s set to premiere the new sci-fi series The Messengers, featuring angels, the Devil, and threats of an impending apocalypse, on April 17, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT. Jon Fletcher stars as Joshua, a televangelist who’s one of five people transformed when a meteor crashes into earth. Joel Courtney co-stars as Peter, a high school swimmer who’s been the constant victim of bullying and is also transformed into a ‘messenger.’

Fletcher and Courtney were among The Messengers cast members who showed up to talk about the new show at the 2015 WonderCon in Anaheim, CA. While neither actor wanted to give too much of the story away, Fletcher revealed that his character will be the only one of the five people who understand what’s happening.

“Everyone else wakes up after the death, and they don’t know what’s happening. He’s the only one who does,” explained Fletcher. “It’s a very tough thing for him because his whole belief system comes crashing down. It sets him on a very dark path, but it gets a lot darker.”

Initially, Fletcher had no idea his character would be going down a dark path, but he ultimately found that twist to be quite compelling.

“He’s just very passionate,” said Fletcher when asked what it was he liked about Joshua. “It’s funny, I don’t have the faith that he has. I have faith but it’s a different sort of faith that Joshua has, so it was interesting to come from that and approach this. The research I was doing on these modern-day preachers – there’s a guy in New York called Carl Lentz who wears a leather jacket, tattooed, has a shaved head. These guys, they’re so passionate that I would sit there for hours watching this guy talk even though we have different beliefs. I was that captivated by just his passion, and that’s really what drew me to Joshua is this passion and this drive that he has. I think that’s where I could relate to him.”

“You’ll see him ebb and flow back and forth between the church,” added Fletcher. “It’s a really tough struggle that he goes on trying to figure out the father that he loved and believed in, whether he was wrong. Whether the way I’ve been raised has been lies.”

And Fletcher really enjoyed performing scenes as a pastor. “I did, yeah,” said Fletcher. “I come from theatre, so it was very theatrical. That was the first scene I did shooting the pilot. So it was like being home in that sense of just walking on stage in front of 200 extras. I had a blast. They were very lovely and let me riff and let me improvise. It was the most fun.”

Jon Fletcher and Joel Courtney The Messengers Interview

Courtney, best known for his starring role in Super 8, has a background of competitive swimming which came in handy as his character is a swimmer. “That was actually one thing when I first read the script, ‘Oh, this is awesome. I can actually do that.’ The swimming, not just the acting,” said Courtney, laughing.

But the initial appeal of playing Peter was the internal struggle he undergoes in the series. “I always found that amazing. The first draft of the pilot which is quite different from what [the pilot] is today…because, obviously, the script goes through changes…but I just loved the script. Immediately within 42 1/2 minutes, I loved each character. It was amazing that within such a short period of time and with such a big cast, you distinctly know each one of them and you really feel for them. I really connected with Peter. I thought, ‘Wow, what a rough background and a childhood to come from.’ I just found that really interesting. I dived into that head first.”
