truTV’s Looking for the Next Great Car Designer

Motor City Masters TV Series at truTV

Brooke Burns is set to host a new reality competition series on truTV specifically for car fans. Motor City Masters pits 10 car designers against each other in a competition to show who’s the most creative. The series is shooting now in LA and will debut on truTV this summer.

Season one will consist of 10 episodes, with the season finale filming in Motor City (Detroit) and featuring a “final show-stopping challenge.” At stake is a prize package that includes a brand new 2014 Camaro Z28, $100,000 cash, and the title of Brand Ambassador.

“As truTV’s first venture into the reality-competition genre, Motor City Masters marks an important step in our strategy to diversify truTV’s programming slate and develop the truTV brand,” said Chris Linn, president, head of programming for truTV. “Cars are a huge part of American pop culture, and people are more interested than ever in how design meets function to impact our everyday lives. We are extremely proud to be working with such an iconic American brand as Chevrolet, as well as the top-notch team at Bunim/Murray Productions.”

“This is going to be a really fun competition for the designers,” said Jonathan Murray, chairman of Bunim/Murray Productions. “The challenges they face will push them to really think about what the American public wants in a car and how the car can better serve their needs.”

“Creating vehicles with great design and performance that live up to the Chevrolet name will be a challenge for the participants,” said Tim Mahoney, chief marketing officer, Global Chevrolet. “We look forward to seeing the top two designers here in Detroit in a few weeks for the finale.”

Details on Motor City Masters:

Motor City Masters will bring together 10 experienced designers, with various specialties and backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for car design. In each episode, the contestants will have the ambitious task of creating new, fully functional (though not street-legal) concept cars based on a theme that will showcase the each competitor’s unique personality.

Challenges on Motor City Masters will explore various aspects of design, inside and out. The designs will be judged by Jean Jennings, president and editor in chief of Automobile Magazine and internationally renowned car designer Harald Belker. They will be joined each week by a special celebrity guest judge. Competitors will be judged on their creativity, execution and forward-thinking design, among other criteria. The field will narrow with each elimination challenge until only the top two designers remain. These two competitors will then face off in front of Chevrolet’s world-class car design experts, after which only one designer will be crowned “The Next Great Car Designer.”

Movie Review: ‘Non-Stop’ Starring Liam Neeson

Liam Neeson stars in Non-Stop Trailer

I started writing this review and placing SPOILER ALERT notes all over the place. Then I realized, I’m just going to say it now. If you don’t want the predictable plot ruined, skip to the grade at the end. I did make sure to avoid saying who the supposedly secret villain is. Though of course, I spotted that person the moment they stepped on-screen. But when you’ve seen as many of these dime-a-dozen thrillers as I have, it’s that much harder to surprise me.

Getting into specifics, I know it seems like a good idea to let Liam Neeson use his very particular set of skills wherever you can. Why not do it on a plane? At least, that’s the premise of Non-Stop. Neeson plays a Federal Air Marshal who, thanks to the clumsy script, is a walking cliché. He’s not just an alcoholic. He’s not just a man who’s lost a child. He’s not just a man with a gruff exterior but has a heart of gold. He’s not just the ex-cop who lost his badge to the combination of the previous three character points. He’s ALL of these things.

Seriously, the movie plays out like the screenwriters found some way to melt down generic action movie scripts (written between 1992 and 2002) into a blender, added gelatin, hit puree, and then pressed the result in an 8½ by 11-inch mold. There’s a little girl who reminds Neeson of his own child. A passenger with a medical condition that never factors into anything besides an early anecdote. A Middle Eastern man who becomes the instant red herring. A NYC cop who will lead the charge to make sure there’s no hijacking. Another Federal Air Marshal who may not be all that he seems. The flight crew who know our hero but at times doubt his trustworthiness. The list goes on and on and on.

Well, the scenario all these stock characters are thrown into is a non-stop flight across the Atlantic (where did they get that title!?). Once they’re over the ocean, Neeson gets a text (Woo hoo! Texts!): someone on the plane is going to die every 20 minutes unless $150 million dollars is transferred into a bank account. As Neeson scours the plane for the suspect, the character and plot reveals get harder and harder to stomach and by the time they make a connection between the events on the plane and 9/11, this wannabe thriller finally devolves into an unintended and unmitigated comedy, with very little action making the trip anything approaching worthwhile.

About the only thing I appreciated about the film was that the plane set didn’t feel too much bigger than a real plane. So … yeah … that was the positive aspect I can mention. Bottom line is that if you’re looking to see the best action film Liam Neeson has done since Taken … you should go re-watch Taken (the international version of course). Non-Stop should have had to reroute somewhere between finishing the script and calling action on set. It’s simply too hard to enjoy a movie when there’s such a disconnect between audience and filmmaker interpretation. I’d rather have sat through another showing of Snakes on a Plane. At least that movie knew it shouldn’t be taken seriously and did what it said it would.

GRADE: D+

Non-Stop opens in theaters on February 28, 2014 and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, some language, sensuality and drug references.

‘Non-Stop’ Review: Even Liam Neeson Can’t Save This Absurd Thriller

Non-Stop Movie Review
Liam Neeson in 'Non-Stop' (Photo © 2014 Universal Pictures)

“Someone on this flight is threatening to kill someone every twenty minutes unless 150 million dollars is transferred to this account number,” says Bill Marsh (Liam Neeson), an Air Marshal on the hunt for a killer on board a transatlantic flight at 40,000 feet after receiving a series of mysterious text messages in the action thriller Non-Stop.

After reluctantly accepting his assignment and boarding the non-stop flight from New York City to London, Bill ends up sitting next to Jen Summers (Julianne Moore), who chats with him during take-off to calm his obviously shaky nerves. It seems Bill doesn’t like to fly, which makes his job being an Air Marshal curious. It’s not long after they’re in the air that Bill receives the menacing text messages.

Puzzled as to how the killer broke the secure network and is able to send him messages on his phone, and not knowing if it’s a sick joke or for real, Bill decides to take it seriously and follow protocol by informing the pilot.

Both the pilot and Bill half suspect it might just be an elaborate hoax until the first dead body turns up, and now the race is on to find the mystery killer on board before he kills again. Bill has another twenty minutes to meet the ransom demands, and he’s forced into trying to find the culprit while not disclosing to the passengers what’s really going on. Not knowing who he can trust, everyone on board – even the crew – are suspects, with Bill slowly becoming paranoid and unsteady in his search for the unknown murderer.

Preposterous and silly, Non-Stop benefits greatly from a strong leading actor but fails miserably to deliver a solid, suspenseful thriller. The film is filled with terrible cringe-worthy dialogue and actually gets worse as it goes along.

There are, perhaps, two positive things to point out about the movie: One, Liam Neeson as the burned-out Air Marshal Bill Marsh. Neeson knows exactly how to play the in-over-his-head hero perfectly and has now become the action star of his generation after tackling films such as Taken, Taken 2, The Grey, and Unknown.

The second is the production and look of the aircraft where most of the drama takes place. Most movies like this often have huge, spacious room on the plane, which makes it look unbelievable and impossible to get off the ground. Non-Stop does a decent job of creating a claustrophobic and realistic atmosphere on the plane. Though it’s not as good as the movie Red Eye starring Rachel McAdams, it’s still noteworthy.

Unfortunately, it’s not enough to save this ridiculous air disaster of a film. It has plot holes a mile long and, throughout the script, painfully bad dialogue with characters saying and doing things that either make no sense or are just plain stupid. Plus, there’s a twist near the end that’s sure to offend most of the audience…no it won’t be revealed here…it’s NOT worthy of being revealed here.

Non-Stop is a ludicrous, absurd suspense thriller minus any and all suspense, and moviegoing audiences should make sure they miss the flight.

GRADE: D

Non-Stop is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, some language, sensuality and drug references.
