Saloon pianos clink, guitars crunch and fiddles, well, they fiddle throughout Write You a Song, Jon Pardi’s debut album on Capitol Records Nashville. And it fits together into a package that practically dares you not to get up and dance.
A lot of Pardi’s energy stems from days on the road and long nights on stages throughout his home state of California. He was already absorbing the spirit of real-world Country when he performed “Friends in Low Places” at age 7 for his father’s 30th birthday party. His first songs came at 12, his first band debuted two years later. The move to Nashville followed two restless years at Butte Junior College.
Apparently his experiences left Pardi unscarred. While there are no tears-in-my-beer blues here, that’s not to say he avoids introspective material. But even on the down-tempo “Love Hangs Around” (written by Pardi, Treat Summar, and Odie Blackmon), you sense that it’s just a matter of time before the lyric’s two long-distance lovers enjoy a happy reunion.
Similarly, the rockin’ numbers have dimension. You’ll hear hardly a mention of trucks or cut-off jeans; instead, actual stories inhabit his down-home grooves. The title cut (Pardi, Bart Butler and Davy Ulbrich), as well as “Up All Night” (Pardi, Butler and Brett Beavers), showcases his fondness for melodies built on tight, repetitive motifs. The guy just sounds like he’s having a ball, and with his amiable drawl he’s inviting us all to join him.

Oscar producers and Ellen DeGeneres (Photo Credit: ABC/Andrew Eccles)Oscar producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron provided a sneak peek at what movie fans can expect from the 86th Academy Awards. Ellen DeGeneres will host Hollywood’s most important night of the year and the show will include a celebration of movie heroes. Per the Academy’s official announcement, the 2014 Oscars will “honor big-screen real-life heroes, super heroes, popular heroes and animated heroes, both past and present, as well as the bold filmmakers who bring them to life.”
“We wanted to unify the show with an entertaining and emotional theme,” stated Zadan and Meron. “People around the world go to the movies to be inspired by the characters they see on the screen. By celebrating the gamut of heroes who have enriched our movie-going experience, we hope to create an evening of fun and joy. And that includes the filmmakers and actors who take risks and stimulate us with provocative subjects and daring characters. They are all heroes in the cinematic landscape.”
“Of course, there will be no shortage of comedy with Ellen DeGeneres as our host,” the producers added. “There may also be a few musical surprises along the way.”

The Marco Polo series that was originally set up at Starz is moving forward but with Netflix as the distributor. Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg are helming the project, with creator John Fusco and Dan Minahan executive producing. Filming’s expected to begin soon on the nine-part series at Pinewood Studios in Malaysia. The Weinstein Company is producing the series.
Netflix expects to air the Marco Polo series in late 2014.
“John Fusco and his team have created a timeless tale of power, adventure, betrayal and lust that combines deft storytelling and cinematic ambition,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “It is a fantastic addition to our slate of original series, both because of its quality and because it is the kind of gripping action-adventure that Netflix members love.”
TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein added, “With the glowing success of series like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, it’s clear that Netflix is breaking tremendous ground in the realm of streaming original content. We could not be more excited to partner with them on this project, along with the creative tour de force of John Fusco and his talented team.”

Bobby Flay and Anne Burrell face off in 'Worst Cooks in America' (PRNewsFoto/Food Network)
Anne Burrell and Bobby Flay will be back attempting to help turn around kitchen disasters with a new season of Worst Cooks of America returning to Food Network on February 17, 2014 at 9pm ET/PT. Season five of the popular primetime series will find last year’s winner, Bobby, trying to defend his title as he and Anne whip “disastrous” cooks into shape during a culinary boot camp that’s not for the weak of heart.
At stake is a $25,000 grand prize to whichever cook shows the most dramatic improvement in their culinary skills.
“Watching Anne and Bobby compete and teach these truly kitchen-challenged contestants is both hilarious and inspiring,” said Bob Tuschman, General Manager and Senior Vice President, Food Network. “With the help of these masters, the contestant’s comical mishaps early on lead to some serious cooking chops and remarkable transformations.”
The season five finale will air on Monday, March 31st at 9pm ET/PT.
Season Five Details:
In the season five premiere episode, the fourteen recruits, each nominated by family and friends for their exceptionally awful cooking skills, are greeted at boot camp by team leaders Anne and Bobby. After each contestant makes their “signature” dish, the challengers are split into two teams and the recruits head to a high-stakes pizza challenge, with a twist.
Anne’s team attempts a Grilled Pizzetta with Ricotta, Sausage, Arugula, and Chili Oil while Bobby’s team attempts Pizza with Parsley Pesto, Cremini Mushrooms, Fontina, and Goat Cheese. The two recruits with the least successful dishes are sent home, while the remaining twelve cook on. Upcoming episodes feature an on-location farm challenge complete with milking cows, a fast-paced sushi preparation and a “breakfast in bed” competition.
Season Five Contestant Bios:
Daniel Beyda (Hewlett Harbor, NY): Radiologist and family man Daniel Beyda is a disaster in the kitchen and his wife isn’t much of a cook either – so for the sake of their three kids, Daniel is determined to improve his food skills. He longs for family dinners and home-cooked meals, and even has a scrapbook of recipes, but gets flustered and scattered when attempting to put dishes together. He is ready to gain kitchen confidence, and looks forward to making the Middle Eastern dish his uncle cooked for him as a child.
Amber Brauner (Redlands, CA): For single mom Amber, the kitchen is an emotional place because it brings back memories of her late mother. She and her mother had children very young, and Amber often gets mistaken for her daughter’s sister. All of her dishes are either bland or burnt, and her friends have even called her cooking worse than prison food. She is discouraged and would rather ink it up at the tattoo parlor where she works as a tattoo artist than stink it up in the kitchen. Amber has four kids and while they handle the cooking for themselves, they are worried that if Amber doesn’t learn to cook, she will never find a husband and end up alone when the kids move out.
Benjamin “Benji” Hunter Brown III (Nashville): Benji just turned thirty, but he has the finicky food tastes of a five-year-old, and his diet of chicken nuggets and fast food has to lead to weight gain and high blood pressure. He has only tried to cook twice in his life – both attempts a disaster – and even though he has a fear of new foods, he is willing to try and change his eating habits and create a healthier environment for himself and his partner of five years. Nominated by his sister, live music booker Benji is known for his warm and engaging personality – and he will do what it takes to improve his kitchen skills.
Mike Glazer (Los Angeles): Mike grew up using the microwave to cook, and never really learned his way around the kitchen. He is a disaster when cooking with oil, after an incident at his mother’s house where his oil technique lit the kitchen curtains on fire. He is ready to propose to his girlfriend and start a family, and this writer and comedian knows improving his cooking skills will make her very happy and move their relationship forward. His girlfriend often works 60-hour weeks, and he hopes to be able to make her delicious home-cooked meals in the future.
Lance Green (New York): Lance loves cooking and watches cooking shows religiously, so it came as a huge surprise to him when his family recently told him he is awful in the kitchen. Lance, an audio engineer and music producer/writer, also stays home part-time with his gluten-free son and realizes he must learn to make healthy food to make sure he’s meeting his optimum dietary needs and to live a healthier life himself. He is so confident his cooking skills will improve, he aspires to one day host his own gluten-free cooking show and write his own cookbook.
Carol Holder (New York): Carol dreams of having her family around the table for a home-cooked meal, like her mother made for her Italian family growing up – but until she learns how to cook, that dream will only be a fantasy. Carol is a successful New York City luxury realtor who sells million-dollar apartments with state-of-the-art kitchens, but she admits kitchens are a strange land to her. She has sophisticated taste, but lets her husband and housekeeper take care of the food. On the rare occasion, she and her husband are in the kitchen together, Carol becomes very overwhelmed and she knows improving her cooking skills will bring her family closer together.
Ken Hsu (Seattle): Personal trainer Ken is a fitness fanatic and knows healthy eating is important for his clients, but he sometimes doesn’t practice what he preaches and indulges in Frito Pies and fast food. He’s adventurous and willing to try new things, and though he is confident in his cooking skills, his girlfriend isn’t – and she has noticed more and more junk food entering his diet. Ken admits his lazy food choices have crept back, and he is determined to learn to make fresh, healthy food on his own.
Casey Pentony (Los Angeles): Casey is a nurse who can save people’s lives, but not feed them so well. She has mastered measuring medicine at the hospital, but doesn’t know a cup from a tablespoon in the kitchen. When Casey attempts to cook, danger looms – she has set off fire alarms, burned food, cut herself and she is also a germaphobe. Her diet is limited to frozen meals and crackers, and she is terrified of fish – just the sight makes her sick. For the sake of her own health and her boyfriend’s, Casey must learn to cook and conquer her culinary fears.
Carie Pullano-Keller (Chester, VA): Carie comes from a long line of Greek and Italian cooks, but unfortunately, that tradition has stopped with her. She is desperate to learn how to cook not only for the sake of tradition but for her family’s health. She ordered take out and fast food for her kids every day for nine years and the situation is not any different today.
Carie is a promotional model but won’t be advertising any kitchen gadgets until she can get her act together. Carie’s husband was recently laid off and the cost of ordering in is taking a toll on their finances. Carie needs to get some kitchen chops fast and prove to her family that she is capable of learning and carrying on their family tradition.
Danielle Ruiz-Wiley (Staten Island, NY): Danielle is a full-time, dedicated mother and wife whose kitchen phobia is impacting her family. When she steps into the kitchen, her nerves take over and she quickly becomes frustrated. In lieu of cooking, Danielle keeps her freezer stocked with prepared meals and frozen dinners, and she also overuses traditional Puerto Rican spices Sazon and Adobo. She and her family eat out so often, the local restaurants know their order by heart. As a result, Danielle’s husband has gained weight and with a new baby and living expenses, they can’t afford to eat out as much as they do. Danielle is afraid if she doesn’t learn to cook she will pass her bad habits to her daughter.
Joe Slaughter (Los Angeles): Joe is the youngest in a large family of good cooks, and his grandfather was even a private chef. He moved from Chicago to Los Angeles for a career in show business and is a professional dancer/model/actor, but his skill set does not expand to the kitchen. His older brother also moved west, and keeps an eye out for Joe – he knows their parents will never stop worrying and his siblings will never stop heckling their “kitchen nightmare” brother until he learns to take care of himself and make a proper meal. Joe is eager to start making healthy food that isn’t bland and tasteless, and prove to his family that he can cook and carry on their food traditions.
Stephanie St. Aubin (Bowie, MD): Stephanie has strong Haitian roots, and cooking plays a big role in her life and traditions. She works for the federal government but still lives at home with her mother, who cooks for her. Stephanie wants to learn how to cook to take some of the work off her mother’s shoulders and ultimately settle down with a husband. Stephanie loves attention and isn’t afraid to flaunt her looks, but in the kitchen her skills are anything but pretty. Her cooking is so bad that she says her go-to kitchen utensils are her cell phone and credit card, so she can order takeout. Stephanie fears if she never learns to cook, her family tradition will be lost, and she won’t ever settle down with a husband.
Jamie Thomas (New York): Jamie has a sophisticated palate and loves good food, but he knows nothing about making it. His career as a flight attendant has exposed him to authentic cuisines from around the world, but Jamie was once turned down for a position because he couldn’t make a simple omelette. His husband and family are skilled home cooks, and Jamie knows he needs to expand his culinary repertoire beyond sticks of butter, cold cereal and the microwave. He looks forward to one day hosting fabulous dinner parties with his husband in their New York apartment.
Muneerah Warner (Philadelphia): Muneerah has a lot of love in her heart, but no luck in the kitchen. An abstinence advocate, she is saving herself for marriage but worries if she doesn’t learn to cook, she will never settle down with a man. Whenever she is in the kitchen, the fire department is on speed dial because within five minutes of preparing a meal, the house is filled with smoke. Her cooking has even made her family sick. Muneerah is tired of lying to her dates and telling them she can cook, she wants to be able to make delicious, healthy meals that will sweep men off their feet.
Andre 3000 and Big Boi of Outkast will be back out performing live in 2014. Outkast is confirmed for at least 40 festival appearances across the globe, including a headlining gig at Coachella in April. The festival run is in celebration of Outkast’s 20th anniversary.
“It’s truly an honor to celebrate 20 years and still be free to do music the way we choose,” said Big Boi. “Don’t just think outside the box, know that there is no box. I’m looking forward to rocking the stage with my Bro Ski and to all the fans – stank you smelly much, this is for y’all!”
“And imagine, all we wanted to do was rap,” said Andre 3000. “I am thankful to have been a part of a group that allowed me to explore anything that came to mind and have fun doing it. Returning to the stage together is the most exciting way for us to thank everyone for their 20 years of supporting Outkast.”
Details on Outkast, courtesy of the band:
It is impossible to quantify the creative impact and influence of Grammy-Award winning rap duo, Outkast, or the work of its members, André “3000” Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton. Together and individually, these Atlanta natives have set the bar for originality, blasting genre boundaries and combining mediums since their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was released in 1994.
The seismic effects of their originality continued to be felt with each subsequent release and, globally, Outkast has sold more than 25 million albums. Their critically lauded, Platinum-Certified sophomore album ATLiens (1996) was one of the rare works of art to be appreciated for being ahead of its time, in its own time. The double-Platinum Aquemini (1998) and quadruple-Platinum Stankonia (2000) received the highest praises from the loftiest critics to the most dedicated of Hip Hop fans.
Both albums were ultimately enshrined in Rolling Stone Magazine’s definitive list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2012. The Diamond-certified Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (2003) was not only a massive commercial success, it also earned six Grammys, including Album of the Year, making Outkast the first rap group ever to win the award in that coveted category. In 2006, the duo pulled off the unexpected by releasing Idlewild, a film both members starred in, and the accompanying soundtrack which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
In recent years, Big Boi and André 3000 have frequently collaborators with a multitude of artists. Big Boi has released two critically acclaimed solo albums, Luscious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty (2010) and Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors (2013). André 3000 appeared in Be Cool, Semi-Pro, Four Brothers, and the upcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic, All Is By My Side. Benjamin’s own high-end clothing line, Benjamin Bixby, debuted in 2010, at which time GQ Magazine named him “Best New Designer of the Year.

The comedy/drama will be back with new episodes later this year with seasons one and two currently available on Netflix for those who need to catch up on the series.

The series is executive produced by Van Zandt and Lasse Hallberg.
The Plot:
Lilyhammer follows former gangster Frank “The Fixer” Tagliano (Van Zandt) as he enters the federal witness protection program trading the mean streets of New York for the icy fjords of Norway, forging a new life among the locals of Lillehammer. Season two continues with Frank living under the alias of Johnny Henriksen, a successful nightclub owner and father of two. As if life couldn’t get more complicated than balancing fatherhood with running a criminal operation, everything Frank cares for is threatened when his former mob associates find out he is still alive.
